Athletics (52-37) at Pirates (53-34)
7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
Even though the Bucs have lost 4 of 6 and just dropped a series to the lowly Cubs, they still return to PNC Park tied for the best record in baseball and will be opening up what amazingly has to be called a marquee series. A few days ago, Greg Brown called Pirates-A’s a potential World Series preview – and while that’s getting ahead of ourselves, these squads are clearly right in the hunt. Oakland has been the darling team in the AL for quite a while now and has shown that last year’s shocking AL West crown was no fluke.
Bartolo Colon (11-3, 2.78) vs. Jeff Locke (8-1, 2.12)
Who would’ve predicted this would be a battle of All-Stars? Colon, who is the biggest pitcher you’ll see since Mike Zagurski, is having a wonderful season and is Oakland’s only All Star rep despite their great record. The righty is coming off a great outing against the Cubs.
Locke will look to validate his selection and keep things rolling for the Bucs. The lefty pitched pretty well last time out in a win over Philly but will face a much tougher test this evening.
