I missed the first seven or so innings of this game, and frankly, I’m glad I did. Of all the pathetic lineups the Giants have had in the wake of all these injuries, this was perhaps the worst: Ross lf, Cabrera 2b, Sandoval 3b, Huff 1b, Tejada ss, Schierholtz rf, Rowand cf, Stewart c, Lincecum p Orlando Cabrera and Miguel Tejada both hitting in the upper part of a major-league lineup. And of course, the notable absence of Brandon Belt. There’s no way to put this eloquently: this team can’t hit. Luckily, the DBacks also lost today, so the Giants didn’t lose any ground in the NL West. Now’s the part where things get better (I hope). 12 consecutive games against losing teams to finish out August (including seven against the MLB-worst Astros). The Astros’ pitching might actually be just what the Giants need to get going — their staff ranks dead-last in the majors in ERA- as well as FIP-. We’ll see.
