Pirates (75-77) at Mets (69-83)

7:10 PM EST–Citi Field, New York

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

Once again, the Pirates’ schedule is giving them a great opportunity to pick up some wins against a bad team. The Mets have been awful lately; they’re coming off a sweep of the Marlins, but before that they lost 11 of 12. They’re miserable at home, too (they have fewer home wins than the Astros). IF the Pirates can play relatively well (and that’s a big if, of course), they can get themselves back into position for a .500 finish by the time they head home to PNC this weekend.

And if they don’t…they’ll become the first team in MLB history that was once at least 16 games over .500 108 games in to the season to finish below .500. (Two finished exactly .500.) Yikes.

Tonight’s starters…

Kyle McPherson (0-1, 2.25) vs. Jenrry Mejia (0-1, 9.00)

Both of these starters are looking for their first major league win. McPherson pitched OK in his first major league start last week against the Brewers, but yielded a homer to the first batter he faced, didn’t get out of the fifth inning, and took a loss.

Mejia has also only started once, and also had a rough outing against the Brewers. In 45 major league innings for his career, he has a 5.20 ERA.
