Pirates (17-20) at Nationals (whatever their record is)

7:05 PM EST—Nationals Park, Washington D.C.

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The Pirates will try to snap a two-game skid tonight in DC. They’ll also be going for a series split with the Nats, which would also give them a season series win over Washington.

I’d say this is a fairly important game for the Pirates. They’ve played poorly for two games in a row and are headed into Detroit this weekend, where they’ll meet Justin Verlander on Friday and a stout lineup all three days. Today the Bucs should have a bit of an edge in the pitching department, so it would be nice if they could take advantage.

Tonight’s starters:

James McDonald (2-2, 2.42) vs. Jordan Zimmermann  (2-3, 2.14)

McDonald has become the Pirates’ “go-to” starter so far this season, and hopefully that won’t change any time soon. J-Mac has continued to pitch very well of late – he was very strong in his last outing (the 1-0 loss to Houston). McDonald has been doing an excellent job of going deep into the game lately, and the Bucs’ bullpen could certainly use another one of those seven or eight inning starts.  He did not face the Nats when they were in Pittsburgh.

Zimmermann is yet another solid young Washington pitcher. He has pitched well this year (including a very strong performance last time out against the Reds), but hasn’t been quite as good as most of his rotation-mates. Zimmermann has never faced the Pirates.
