This is a big week for the Pirates. Yes, they are chasing the Reds in the NL Central–and winning the division is, of course, the main goal for the regular season. But the next goal is to make the playoffs. The Bucs are currently in position for the second spot in the wild-card play-in game. They lead the Dodgers and Cardinals by 2.5 games for that spot. The Bucs play the Dodgers for four games this week, then hit the road to play the Cardinals this weekend.
Los Angeles is one of just four NL teams (Padres, Mets, Cardinals) with a winning record against the Pirates this year, by virtue of a sweep in April. The Dodgers improved at the deadline, grabbing Hanley Ramirez and Shane Victorino. I think they’re the new favorite to win the West, but the Giants are currently in front by a game. LA has been pretty streaky for most of the season, and could be on the upswing lately now ...

Dodgers promote Yasiel Puig to Rancho Cucamonga?
The Dodgers just might have promoted Yasiel Puig to Rancho Cucamonga. Here's a tweet from sp11ke (former minor-leaguer):
"#Dodgers Yasiel Puig is in the stands here at Rancho Cucamonga. I guess his 1.500 OPS in 9 AZL games was enough."
It makes sense. The Dodgers wouldn't just randomly have Puig attend a game in Rancho from Arizona, so it's a safe assumption...
Pirates Notebook: Karstens Tinkering with Curve; McDonald Gets Bumped in Rotation
Jeff Karstens – Image Credit: Pittsburgh Pirates
Jeff Karstens has been working on some adjustments over his last several starts. Since returning from the disabled list due to a shoulder injury, which caused him to miss over two months, Karstens has posted a 3.79 ERA after his four earned run outing on Monday against Los Angeles.
“I don’t think I’ve pitched terribly, but...
The best of #FakePiratesAuction
During last night’s game, the Pirates and ROOT Sports hosted a charity auction that was wildly successful. By auctioning off some very neat Pirates-related prizes/experiences and some VIP bags, they raised over half a million dollars for Pirates Charities, which is incredible. The proceeds will benefit the Pirates’ “Wins for Kids” program and the Children’s Institute of...

Pirates News And Notes
Just some news and notes before the Bucs take on the Dodgers this week. It was announced that James McDonald will be moved back to Friday, and AJ Burnett will pitch on Thursday, for the getaway game against the Dodgers. This will give James another day to rest, and hopefully fix what is going wrong.
It’s important that the Pirates get him right before the end of the season...
Six-man rotation can’t hurt the Pirates
James McDonald has been absolutely awful since the break. Erik Bedard and Wandy Rodriguez can’t figure out which side of the suck line they want to stay on. And AJ Burnett and Jeff Karstens finally didn’t look capable of stealing a win for the Pirates in their last starts. With 9 games left on their current 20 in 20 stint, the six-man rotation that Clint Hurdle is going with...

Indianapolis Indians Player Notes 8/14/12: Kyle McPherson and Bryan Morris
The West Division-leading Indianapolis Indians dropped a 4-2 decision to the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday evening at Rochester’s Frontier Field. In this game, right-hander Kyle McPherson made his second Triple-A start for the Indians. It was McPherson’s 11th start of the season. He missed the first two months of the season with shoulder right-shoulder inflammation.

Dodgers place Hairston on DL, recall Herrera
Utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Dodgers with left hip inflammation. The move is retroactive to Aug. 12. Hairston is batting .273 with four home runs and 26 RBIs this season. Infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera was recalled from Class AAA Albuquerque, where he was hitting .299 with one home run and 19 RBI in 24 games since being sent...
Barmes Grand Slam Could be Turning Point
It was the third inning and the Pirates looked to be in a very familiar position that had plagued the last 19 seasons. They were losing -getting crushed- by a team that was out of the playoff hunt for three months now. The Padres, winners of ten straight at PNC Park, took a quick 1-0 lead on the second pitch of the game thanks to a Chris Denorfia solo homer. The Padres plated three...

Game 114: Pirates 11 Padres 5
"One swing."That's what I told myself when the Padres took their 4-0 lead in the first inning today. As I wrote earlier today, the Pirates are playing badly. I'm trying to take the long view of the season here, but they're not making it super-easy. A sweep to the Padres with Ross Ohlendorf on the mound? That'd be tough to stomach, wild card lead or no...
Victorino powers Dodgers past Pirates
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Shane Victorino hit his 10th homer of the season and drove in three runs to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.
Matt Kemp added two hits for the Dodgers, who moved within 1 games of the Pirates for one of the two National League wild card spots. Aaron Harang (8-7) pitched six effective innings to snap a modest...
