Dodgers (62-53) at Pirates (64-50)

7:05 PM EST–PNC Park, Pittsburgh

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

This is a big week for the Pirates. Yes, they are chasing the Reds in the NL Central–and winning the division is, of course, the main goal for the regular season. But the next goal is to make the playoffs. The Bucs are currently in position for the second spot in the wild-card play-in game. They lead the Dodgers and Cardinals by 2.5 games for that spot. The Bucs play the Dodgers for four games this week, then hit the road to play the Cardinals this weekend.

Los Angeles is one of just four NL teams (Padres, Mets, Cardinals) with a winning record against the Pirates this year, by virtue of a sweep in April. The Dodgers improved at the deadline, grabbing Hanley Ramirez and Shane Victorino. I think they’re the new favorite to win the West, but the Giants are currently in front by a game. LA has been pretty streaky for most of the season, and could be on the upswing lately now that Matt Kemp is back.

Tonight’s starters…

Aaron Harang (7-7, 3.80) vs. Jeff Karstens (4-2, 3.77)

Harang has had a decent year, but is vulnerable to bad outings now and then…especially lately. He’s another mediocre veteran arm, much like Jason Marquis. Let’s hope the Bucs fare a little better against Harang.

Karstens has still been solid, but has now gone three starts in a row without pitching past the sixth. The bullpen’s been worked pretty hard lately, so it would be nice to see him work deep into the game tonight.
