 Giants (45-48) at Pirates (46-36)

7:05 PM EST–PNC Park, Pittsburgh

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The San Francisco Giants are in town for the weekend, as the Bucs look to keep things rolling at home before the All-Star break begins next week. PNC Park should be full all weekend and it should be a blast if the Pirates keep it going.

About the Giants:

San Fran took 2 of 3 from the Bucs out at their place in April, including Matt Cain‘s near-perfect game that was broken up by James McDonald. Luckily, the Pirates won’t see Cain this weekend. The Giants had been playing pretty good ball lately and overtook the Dodgers in the NL West, but fell back in to second after getting swept at Washington this week. They’ve got a decent lineup, but the fact that three Giants will be starting the All-Star game is a joke. Their fans went absolutely nuts with the voting.

Links & Notes:

  • Here’s an instructional video on how to properly do the Zoltan “Z.” Left hand on top, people! Don’t screw it up!
  • The Reds lost late last night, so the Bucs enter the night two games up in the division.
  • The Pirates have the best home record in baseball (27-13). They have the fourth-best overall record in baseball, and the second-best in the NL. Pretty cool.
  • Here’s an “A-to-Z Pirates Bandwagon Fan Guide” from ESPN.com.

Tonight’s starters…

Barry Zito (6-6, 3.84) vs. Erik Bedard (4-9, 4.57)

Zito’s having a bit of a resurgent year, although he hit a very rough patch a couple of starts ago. He’s recovered with strong outings his last two times out, but may still be vulnerable to the mighty Lumber Company that has inhabited PNC for the last month. Zito allowed two earned runs in seven innings and took a no decision in a SF win over the Bucs in April.

Bedard has been a mess lately, but the good news is he’s been much better at home. He’s only pitched poorly once all year at PNC Park, and even that was just four runs (on May 21 vs. the Mets). Still, Erik’s struggles of late have been concerning and it would be great to see him give the rotation some momentum after Jeff Karstens‘ great outing yesterday.
