Pirates (28-27) at Reds (31-24)

7:10 PM EST–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The Pirates and Reds square off in a rubber match tonight, as the Bucs look to take the series and get back to within two of first place.

In case you missed it, I went on a mini-rant about baserunning in yesterday’s recap. If you’re wondering specifically how the Pirates’ baserunning is costing them runs, check out this great piece by David Manel at Bucs Dugout that breaks down all kinds of baserunning numbers and trends.

The draft wrapped up yesterday, and you can read all about the later-round picks on Pirates Prospects (day 2 here, day 3 here). Also, if you won’t be watching the Pirates game tomorrow night or if you are in the mood for some hardcore channel-changing, Mark Appel will pitch tomorrow night at 7 pm on ESPN2. He’ll be going up against third-ranked Florida State in the first game of Stanford’s NCAA Super Regional series.

We still haven’t heard anything from Appel, but his agent Scott Boras doesn’t seem too pleased with how the new CBA impacted the draft. I’m fairly confident Appel will sign – he’d be foolish not to, really – but there’s definitely a long way to go on that front.

Tonight’s starters…

Kevin Correia (2-5, 4.19) vs. Mike Leake (2-5, 4.95)

KC is coming off a solid start in Milwaukee, but his peripherals continue to indicate that he’s a ticking time bomb and will regress heavily very soon. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen tonight, but he’ll have a tough time keeping the Reds hitters at bay in this homer-friendly ballpark.

Leake hasn’t been good this year, so the Bucs may have a shot at hanging in this one even if Correia isn’t on his game. Three of his last four starts have been impressive, though, and he posted a quality start (7 innings, 3 runs) against the Bucs a month ago at PNC Park.

As you might have guessed, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips could be a problem for Kevin tonight. He has handled Jay Bruce fairly well in the past, though.

The Bucs have seen plenty of Leake over the last year or so, and their better bats have hit him pretty well. Time to get the offense back on track tonight (before the 8th inning).
