Pirates (57-42) at Astros (34-67) 7:05 PM EST–Minute Maid Park, Houston Here is the Gameday TV: ROOT Sports The Pirates will attempt to clinch this weekend’s series against the Astros tonight as they send their newest acquisition to the mound. Tonight’s starters… Wandy Rodriguez (7-9, 3.79) vs. Armando Galarraga (0-0, 0.00) Rodriguez will take the mound as a Pirate for the first time, and he’ll do so in his former home yard against his former club. Wandy has been in the Astros organization his entire career (no trades or free agency since he signed back in 1999) so this will be extra-weird for him, presumably. Hopefully he can get his Bucco career off to a good start. You’ll remember Galarraga as the guy that was robbed of a perfect game in Detroit by umpire Jim Joyce. He hasn’t done a whole lot since then, though, and has bounced around a couple teams and hasn’t even pitched in the bigs this year. He went 3-2 with a 3.97 ERA in Houston’s minor league system this season. Pittsburgh Pirates: Trade deadline update

Some numbered thoughts heading into Tuesday’s MLB 4:00PM non-waiver trade deadline… 1-5:  Wandy Rodriguez 1.  I’ve been very critical of Pirates’ GM Neal Huntington over the past year, but I was impressed with last week’s SP Wandy Rodriguez trade with Houston.  While other clubs were still jockeying with the Cubs for Ryan Dempster, and waiting to see if the Phillies...

Wandy Rodriguez starting Saturday, Kevin Correia to bullpen

Wandy Rodriguez, scheduled to make his first start for the #Pirates Saturday, chats with the media in Houston… — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) July 26, 2012 Rodriguez will indeed make his first Pirates start on Saturday against his old team. The addition of Rodriguez shakes up the rotation a bit. Kevin Correia is off to the bullpen for now, according...

Pirates' Rodriguez struggles with control while facing his ex-team

In the grand scheme of things, Wandy Rodriguez's next start for the Pittsburgh Pirates will be more important than his first outing with his new club. The veteran left-hander is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Cincinnati. The Pirates trail the Reds by three games in the National League Central. However, Rodriguez figures to have fewer...

Wandy's first start

I can't really imagine how weird it must be for Wandy Rodriguez to be making his Pirate debut in Minute Maid Park against his old team; he hasn't even left Houston since Tuesday's trade because the Astros were at home and the Pirates were on their way there. Really, so far this week, the only thing that's changed for him is that he's sitting in a different dugout...

Bucs edge Astros yet again

The Pirates found another way to win (or the Astros found another way to lose, depending on how you want to look at it) as they defeated Houston for the third straight night to improve to sixteen games over .500. SIXTEEN! Wandy Rodriguez‘s Pirates debut was “meh.” He was uncharacteristically wild (five walks despite averaging just 2.2 per nine innings) but pitched out of trouble...

Marte to Make Debut; Hernandez Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates made several moves on Thursday. They optioned outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was added to the 25-man roster. Rodriguez was acquired from the Houston Astros on Saturday night in exchange for three prospects. His next scheduled start is TBA. Rodriguez last started on Monday. Prospect Starling Marte was also officially...

Astros edged by Rodriguez, Pirates

HOUSTON (AP) -- Rod Barajas hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past Houston 4-3 on Saturday night, sending the Astros to their club-record 12th straight loss. Wandy Rodriguez pitched six innings in his Pittsburgh debut, allowing three runs and six hits with five walks against his former team. The free-falling Astros, who have lost 25...

Pirates comeback again to win Wandy’s Debut

Final: Pirates 4, Astros 3 WP: Chris Resop (1-3, 3.10 ERA) LP: Chuckie Fick (0-1, 6.75 ERA) SV: Jason Grilli (2, 1.86 ERA) Wandy Rodriguez was all over the place in his Pirates debut, but was able to labor through six innings to get a “quality start.” I have to imagine that I would feel a little weird and a bit nervous making my debut with a new team against the club I was a...

MLB's Arms Race Heating Up as Trade Deadline Draws Near

It's that time of year in Major League Baseball. As next Tuesday's trade deadline draws near, talk is heating up across baseball about which players are going to be dealt. As usual, the number one commodity is starting pitching, as every contender is looking for an extra arm to fill out its playoff rotation. The fates of some players have already been decided. The Astros...

The Bleakness That Is The Houston Astros’ Franchise

2012 is important for the Astros to sift through all the recently-added players from 2011′s trades and callups from the minors.  The 2012 season will be a pretty bleak season for fans at Minute Maid Park.  – 2012 Houston Astros Forecast from the 2012 Pirates Prospects Annual. When I wrote those words in December 2011, I knew things were going to be ugly for the Astros in 2012...

A Much Anticipated Debut For Wandy

The Debut is not just being anticipated by the Pirates, but also Wandy himself.  Wandy will be going up against the team he has been pitching for since he broke into the Major Leagues 8 seasons ago.  As he stared into the Houston Dugout during the first couple of games in the series, you have to wonder just what was he thinking? On Thursday it was Starling Marte, tonight it is...
