FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Just being on the mound was good enough for Jaime Garcia. Tossing scoreless ball made it even better. Making his first appearance since injuring his shoulder in the playoffs, the left-hander got through two shutout innings Tuesday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox 15-4. In Game 2 of the NL division series against Washington, Garcia was pulled after two innings because of a strained rotator cuff and inflammation. Garcia kept the Red Sox scoreless, working around three hits and a walk. He threw 43 pitches, 30 for strikes, and struck out two. "I'm excited about today," Garcia said. "This is good, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you this is the best I've ever felt. No. This is good. This is good enough. I'm excited about that. But compared to last year, this is something I can build on." Garcia gave up consecutive singles to Jackie Bradley Jr. and Daniel Nava to open the game before retiring the next three batters, including Ryan Lavarnway on a strikeout. With one out in the second, Garcia walked Drew Sutton and gave up a double to Jose Iglesias before getting out of the inning, fanning Bradley to end the inning. "To be honest with you, there was some excitement going on there especially because it was the first time in a real game after the stuff that happened last year," Garcia said. "A lot of good things from it. Physically, I feel fine. A little jumpy at the beginning. I was happy with the way I felt physically, with the way it went." Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was pleased with what he saw from Garcia. "I made a commitment to myself not to microscope him," Matheny said. "I just know he's going to be out there. He's going to do the things that he says he's going to be out there to do. He looked good today." Boston starter Ryan Dempster made his Grapefruit League debut against a familiar foe. He has appeared in 49 career games against the Cardinals, more than any other active pitcher. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, he pitched two hitless innings and struck out two. He threw 33 pitches, 24 for strikes. The only runner against him was Oscar Tavares, who reached on an error by second baseman Jonathan Diaz. "Things went good," Dempster said. "Felt like body and arm felt good. Was able to attack the strike zone for the most part. Good first day." Red Sox manager John Farrell enjoyed Dempster's outing. "He threw the ball well, established his fastball, showed a good split against righties and lefties both," Farrell said. "Went out and did exactly what we hoped he'd do in two innings of work." "He was clean. Did a good job of controlling the running game. I thought he threw the ball very well for his first outing in camp," he said. Red Sox reliever Clayton Mortensen took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in two innings. Tony Cruz hit a three-run double with two outs in the third. "I thought he threw the ball better than the line shows," Farrell said. Matt Adams, who had been slowed by tendinitis in his knee, had a two-run, pinch-hit homer for the Cardinals. He later drew a bases-loaded walk. "He's got big-time power," Matheny said. "He's got a pretty good idea of the strike zone and a pretty good idea of his swing and he repeats it." NOTES: Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz, who had been slowed by a right hamstring strain on the first day of official workouts for pitchers and catchers, threw a two-inning, 40-pitch simulated game Tuesday morning. He is expected to start Saturday against the Twins. ... Boston 1B Mike Napoli is expected to get into his first game on Friday when the Red Sox host the Pirates. Napoli, who joined Boston as a free agent this offseason, is being brought along slowly this after his team physical revealed he has avascular necrosis in both hips. ... Farrell didn't rule out the possibility of Bradley, one of Boston's top prospects, making the team out of spring training. Bradley, who was promoted to Double-A during the season last year, will get some games in right field when Shane Victorino leaves for the World Baseball Classic. ... Switch-hitting SS Rafael Furcal reported he felt fine after taking some swings left-handed on Monday. Furcal, who tore a ligament in his right elbow last season and has been bothered by a bone spur this spring, received an anti-inflammatory injection in the joint on Friday. He said he could get into a game this weekend for the Cardinals.

2013 Cardinals Composite Top Prospect List (Final)

Each year I like to compile a composite prospect list, taking the top prospects lists from across the web, assigning points to each ranking and then using these points to create a composite ranking.  I do this each February for the top 100 prospects in baseball, which can be found at my MLB Composite Prospect Index site and I also do it for each team, including my favorite,...

Bullpen should again be strength for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. Mitchell Boggs has no problem saying it. He thinks the Cardinals bullpen could be good. Real good. And after he backed up his talk a year ago with a strong personal season, those doubting him might want to think again. Boggs made headlines last winter when he said he could compete with anybody in the game and predicted a big season from himself on the mound. He then...

St. Louis Cardinal's Chris Carpenter’s Absence Will be Felt in October

It’s no secret the St. Louis Cardinals are possibly the deepest team in baseball.   From the big leagues down to rookie ball—there is no franchise more loaded than the redbirds going into 2013 and many other reputable baseball publishers agree. Which is why many experts are pegging the Cardinals to make their third straight … Continue reading »

Carpenter adjusting to life at second base

JUPITER, Fla. Matt Carpenter wasn't sure how to react when he moved from second base back over to first base for the final few innings of Sunday's spring training game. Carpenter has concentrated so hard on learning to play second base this spring that playing his more normal spot of first base almost seemed too easy. "It's funny," Carpenter said. "...

Taveras impressive for Cardinals thus far

JUPITER, Fla. Jon Jay has a message for the folks already anointing Cardinals prospect Oscar Taveras as the next Mike Trout or Bryce Harper. "Let the kid play," Jay said Monday. "Thats my biggest thing. Let the kid play and whatever comes of it, comes. He definitely does have a great talent and you can see that, but I hate when they try to label someone as the next...

St. Louis Cardinals: Can the Cardinals fill the holes in the starting rotation?

The St. Louis Cardinals have made some magical runs the last two baseball seasons.  One ending with a World Series Championship and the other, a disappointing National League Championship Series loss to the eventual World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals are poised to make another run in 2013, but there are some questions in their starting rotation. The news...

Spring Training: Up and Running St. Louis Cardinals

Oh my, how time does fly. It is that time of year again! Pitchers and catchers have reported, and now teams have started playing spring training games. If one is particularly caught in the moment, one might be worried that the Cardinals are 0-2 so far in spring training play. But since that’s only two games, and spring training results have little to no correlation to regular season...

Wacha Wacha Wow

The St. Louis Cardinals have shown offensive prowess over the last week, racking up the run support and showing midseason form at the plate.  The offense was impressive, but may have been overshadowed by the presence of pitching prospect Michael Wacha. Wacha took the mound behind starter Lance Lynn on Wednesday against the Mets.  The young prospect was making his second appearance...

To understand Wainwright’s future, consider the Cardinals past.

Adam Wainwright made his first “start” in what could be a year full of both starts and stops. Of course he’s still over a month away from his first meaningful appearance of the year, but these days, not much he says or does is without meaning. With the high stakes nature of his ongoing contract negotiations hanging over his 6’7” frame, the comparison machine is going crazy...

Carpenter, Lohse and Dave Duncan’s impact

In several recent tweets, ESPN’s Buster Olney was sharing the thoughts of a talent evaluator offering his opinions as to why Kyle Lohse is still unsigned. The following quote comes from the evaluator with the conclusion apparently Olney’s. “When’s the last time you saw a pitcher leave St. Louis and do well elsewhere?” The Dave Duncan effect. With the recent announcement...

Player Profile #56: Allen Craig | 1B, OF | STL

In terms of raw talent, Allen Craig is an exciting player in fantasy. His biggest strength is his elite contact skills, though by “contact skills” I don’t just mean his ability to put the bat on the ball. There are many players who swing and miss less than Craig (his 6.9% swinging strike rate was just 53rd-best of the 193 players to register at least 400 PA last year), but not...
