Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner played in his second rehab game on Wednesday and Eric Chavez is awaiting test results as both players could be back on the field by this weekend.

Gardner, who hurt his elbow making a diving catch on April 17, went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and played left field again. There was no news immediately available after the game, but a day off and then a Friday return seems likely as there was no report of a setback.

As for Chavez, he has been out since he suffered a concussion on May 2, and took some tests on Wednesday. If those results come back clear he could play in a game this weekend. He is already participating in baseball activities, which is a good sign.

“The cobwebs are gone,” Chavez told Kieran Darcy of ESPNNewYork.com. “I feel 100 percent.”

The Yankees could obviously use Chavez back, but they really need Gardner back. After a terrible week last week, the offense is still struggling without him this week. He’s obviously not the cure all, but he helps and his defense out in left saves them a lot of runs that make a big difference when the offense isn’t coming through.

D-Rob saves 1st game post-Rivera

David Robertson saved his first game in the post-Mariano Rivera world and it was in classic D-Rob fashion. It wasn’t exactly pretty, but Robertson showed off why he is called Houdini, loading up the bases before striking out the final two batters to end the game. It’s almost like he needs the situation to be as high-leverage as possible before he really turns his game up....

Considering the Yankees Major League trade chips

The Yankees have plenty of trade chips in the minor leagues, but at the Major League level there really isn’t much other teams’ would be interested in. Usually it’s because contracts are too big for other teams to take on, but even the players with reasonable contracts are hard to trade and get fair value back in return. Three players the Yankees could potentially deal at...

Yanks' Mark Teixeira has breathing isse

After an offseason in which Mark Teixeira talked about getting into better shape to become a more productive player, he has been off to an unproductive start. Perhaps now he's figured out why. The Yankees first baseman visited a chest specialist Wednesday and was diagnosed with "severely inflamed bronchial airways" that have impacted his breathing. "I was getting...

The Yankee beat: Hamilton, Banuelos, and Reggie

The Yankees scored one run in the first and then the offense took the rest of the night off. David Phelps and the bullpen nearly pulled out the win anyway, but David Robertson had his worst outing in nearly two years as they lost 4-1 after heading into the 9th with a 1-0 lead. Here is the recap and graph. Here is what the Yankees blogosphere was talking about today. The Pinstriped...

D-Rob vs Soriano: Who should be the closer?

To be honest, David Robertson might be my favorite Yankee right now.  Not just favorite Yankee pitcher, favorite Yankee overall.  That is, favorite Yankee not named Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera.  I’ve loved Robinson Cano since he was rocking Roger Clemens’ old No. 22 jersey and any one of my friends here at St. John’s will tell you that I have watched hours upon hours...

10-K outing runs Sabathia's winning streak to five starts

In a season that has seen the New York Yankees rotation struggle to find any consistency, CC Sabathia appears to have settled into a groove. Sabathia allowed seven hits and walked one, striking out a season-high 10 batters. "Best...

Robertson gets his first save as Yankees' new closer

NEW YORK -- The intimidating guitar riffs of "Enter Sandman" were gone, along with the aura of invincibility Mariano Rivera brought with him on his placid jog in from the bullpen. Mo Blessed, Robertson Blows

I am going to ignore Day 2 of The David Robertson Era. It is too painful even to think about. Although, I suppose I would be in much more pain if I were more than the fair weather Knicks fan then I am and if I were a New York Rangers fan period. So there's that. What kind of a fan is Mariano Rivera?  You know he is a fan of God (even if some fans call Mo himself a god.)....
