On Thursday, I attended the first half of a back-to-back crosstown doubleheader. I joined the masses for Thursday's "getaway day" special between the Cubs and Brewers at Wrigley Field. With free neighborhood parking and a friendly secondary ticket market at play (one popular site had tickets available for 19 cents plus fees), I entered the stadium for less than the cost of a large latte. I had high expectations for the matchup between Zack Greinke and Matt Garza. Both pitchers factored prominently in our FOXSports.com "Baseball Hot Streak" game (http://msn.foxsports.com/fantasy/baseball/hotstreak/ ) and delivered the requisite strikeout numbers (five to keep your streak alive), but Greinke's final stat line was positively brutal. Greinke fell victim to some lackadaisical fielding (Ryan Braun and Mat Gamel left me scratching my head) and had zero movement on his pitches during the Cubs' six-run third inning. He departed in the fourth inning after yie...

Madison Bumgarner Dazzles, Giants Win 4-2

And that’s the formula. It took the Giants several games to master it, but there it is, finally: a strong outing from the starter, shutdown relief*, and just enough run support. It’s rather surprising, but six games into the season, this was only the Giants’ second quality start. In fact, this was only their second decent start. Four of the previous five starts — the one...

Matt Garza, Legitimate Number One Starter

Matt Garza has always had the stuff to be an elite top tier starter, but never quite put it all together until last year. As Dave Allen and Josh Weinstock explained during this past season, a heavier reliance on his secondary pitches was instrumental in his turn around from three consecutive seasons with an FIP between 4.14 and 4.42 to a breakout 2.95 mark last season. I also looked...

Garza shines, Greinke routed as Cubs beat Brewers

Matt Garza pitched three-hit ball for 8 2-3 innings, and the Chicago Cubs sent Zack Greinke to his worst beating in 11/2 years in an 8-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday that prevented a four-game sweep. Helping the Cubs improve to 2-5, Garza (1-0) struck out nine and walked two - both in the first two innings. He induced Cesar Izturis to hit into an inning-ending...

Line of the Day: Matt Garza

April 12, 2012: Matt Garza of the Chicago Cubs pitched 8 2/3 innings of masterful baseball in leading his team to an 8-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He struck out nine and allowed just three hits and two walks, retiring 15 of 16 hitters at one point during the game. Line: 8.2 IP | 3 H | 0 ER | 2 BB | 9 K; W (1-0) | QS My fantasy perspective: Garza seems to be performing...

Cubs 8, Brewers 0

GIFcap: “A comebacker, awesome, totally gonna get this CG SHO … crap.” – Matt Garza

Well on his way to pitching a complete game shutout against the rival Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza only had one out left. Norichika Aoki tapped the ball back to Garza for what looked like an easy play to top off his outstanding performance … then Garza did this. After the play he

Brewers Blanked by Cubs in Series Finale, 8-0

(Garza Dominated the Brewers in the Series Finale/Getty Images)What started out as a second straight day of a pitchers duel between the Brewers (4-3) and Cubs at Wrigley Field quickly turned into a dominating performance as the Cubs (2-5) took it to Zack Greinke in the 3rd inning in route to an 8-0 win the series finale.  After two innings of shutout baseball things fell apart for...

Giants 4, Rockies 2

No win for the ages. Or, for that matter, the aged. Madison Bumgarner scattered four hits over 7 1-3 innings and took a no-hit bid into the sixth Thursday in the San Francisco Giants' 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. At 49, Moyer failed in his second attempt to become the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Moyer (0-2) surrendered four runs, two of them earned, and...

SF Giants Rumors: Scoring Isn’t A Problem, Young vs. Old, Today’s Lineup

It’s no secret that the San Francisco Giants pitching is no where close to where it should be. All I can say is these guys are way to good, so they will get this turned around soon.   The offense is what really has a lot of Giants fans excited right now. We know the pitchers are going to get back in their groove, and the wins will start to pile up with the way the G-Men are putting...

Projecting the Series: Giants vs. Pirates

Opening day has arrived. On the bright side things are starting to look a little better for the Giants after taking 2 out of 3 from the Rockies. Madison Bumgarner pitched an excellent game, Barry Zito threw a shutout and the Giants offense continued to score runs in bunches. There were some not so good things but now isn't the time to rehash those because opening...

Torture Ball Returns…Now With More Sodium

Torture Ball is back. Madison Bumgarner’s gem was nearly undone by a near meltdown by the nearly injured Brian Wilson, who hurt his (Oblique? Ankle? Elbow?) before finishing the ninth in the most cringe-inducing fashion. You know it’s a bad inning when Jason Giambi accidently singles to load the bases. Bottom line: Quality bounce back game from Bumgarner. He wasn’t leaving...

Oh, Those Giants.

Finally, the Giants team we all came to know and have heart attacks over decided to show up, making the universe feel just a little more in balance.  Barry Zito is still technically our best pitcher, but Madison Bumgarner looks like he’s ready to give him a run for his massive stockpiles of money in throwing a no-hitter through 5+ innings the day after the Giants surrendered two...
