I got down to Bradenton around noon on Wednesday, after about 15 hours of driving from Virginia. For the last two days I’ve been unpacking the moving truck. That’s not finished yet, but I thought I’d take a break for this.
The Pirates are set to open their Spring Training schedule today with a Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage. The teams are set to go five and a half innings. Below are the lineups and pitchers.
1. Alex Presley, CF
2. Chase d’Arnaud, SS
3. Jerry Sands, RF
4. Clint Robinson, 1B
5. Brandon Inge, DH
6. Jared Goedert, 3B
7. Josh Harrison, 2B
8. Michael McKenry
9. Felix Pie, LF
SP – Gerrit Cole
RP – Kyle Waldrop, Erik Cordier, Hunter Strickland
Bench – Anderson Hernandez, Lucas May
1. Starling Marte, LF
2. Jose Tabata, CF
3. Matt Hague, 3B
4. Gaby Sanchez, 1B
5. Brad Hawpe, DH
6. Jordy Mercer, SS
7. Tony Sanchez, C
8. Ivan De Jesus Jr., 2B
9. Darren Ford, CF
SP – Jameson Taillon
RP – Kyle Johnson, Vic Black
Bench – Carlos Paulino, Ali Solis
The big thing here, other than the obvious start to the baseball season, is that Cole and Taillon will be squaring off. The top prospects will be going up against a group largely made of non-roster invitees, or 40-man roster players competing for jobs. It’s pretty much the equivalent of a really good Triple-A squad. That will be a good first test for Cole, who is set to open his 2013 season with Indianapolis. Taillon is set to open in Altoona, but this will be a good chance for him to face some upper level hitting.
Cole and Taillon are each throwing two innings, with all of the relievers pitching one inning each. The game starts at noon, and I’ll update this post throughout the game with notes on all of the performances.

According to Rob Biertempfel on Twitter, the final rosters have been released for the 2013 World Baseball Classic and the only change among Pittsburgh Pirates players is Ivan De Jesus Jr withdrawing from Team Puerto Rico. Biertempfel says that De Jesus withdrew to stay in camp to compete for a major league job.
The final rosters include Jameson Taillon, Russell Martin and Chris...
Final: Pirates 3, Rays 2 (box)
WP: Jeff Locke (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: J.D. Martin (0-1, 4.50 ERA)
SV: Brooks Brown (1, 0.00 ERA)
Jeff Locke started for the Bucs and pitched three scoreless innings. He struck out one, walked one, and didn’t allow a hit.
Starling Marte went 1 for 2 with a single and a stolen base in the fourth inning. He eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Garrett...
Ben Badler of Baseball America, released his recap of the Pirates 2012 International spending today. Like every other team in baseball, the Pirates had a $2.9 M cap for spending on International players. That cap didn’t go into place until July 2nd and it runs until June 15,2013. Any signings made earlier in the year did not count against it, plus there are a few allowances for...
The Pirates beat the Rays 3-2 this afternoon to open up Grapefruit League play…so for the first time in 2013, you can raise it! (Right?)
Jeff Locke pitched three strong scoreless innings. He allowed no hits and the Rays didn’t even get a ball out of the infield against him. Jeff had one strikeout and got seven ground ball outs. He allowed one walk, but picked off the runner...
A.J. Burnett has been named the Pittsburgh Pirates Opening Day starter this season. Coming off a 16-10 season while posting a 3.51 ERA, Burnett gets the mound on Opening Day for the first time in his career. Burnett might have had a chance to win 20 last season but fractured his orbital bone while fouling a ball in bunt practice. He lost two months of the season.
Burnett has won...
The second weekend of the college season is about to get under way. The Pirates have the #9 and #14 picks in the upcoming June amateur draft. Throughout the college/HS season, leading up to the draft, we will cover the interesting players that are being discussed in the Pirates draft range. There will also be daily notes on past picks by the Pirates who went unsigned. For a recap...
The Pirates open up Spring Training play this afternoon against the Rays at 1:00. It’ll be broadcast on 93.7, and while I’m making a conscious effort to try not to read ANYTHING in to exhibition games at all, I’m definitely looking forward to hearing some live Bucco baseball. Every game is either on the radio (sometimes online-only) or TV, but the first TV game isn’t until...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher Jose Contreras on a minor league deal, with an invitation to Spring Training. He will report to Pirates training camp on Sunday. The 41-year-old native of Cuba had off-season elbow surgery and will be rehabbing during Spring Training.
Contreras has a 78-67 career record in 292 games, 175 of those as a starter. The ten-year veteran...
In the last week I’ve been getting a few questions about the Pirates Prospects 2013 Annual. The book has been in pre-sale status since the Prospect Guide was released in December. That was to allow people to buy both books at the discounted combo pack price. The book still hasn’t been released yet, but should be coming out in the next week.
Last year the book was released on...
Tonight, it was announced that former Phillies relief pitcher Jose Contreras had signed a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The minor league contract includes an invite to Bradenton, Florida, where the Pirates' spring training camp is located. Contreras, 41, suffered a season-ending injury last June when he had a...
The Pirates have signed veteran right-handed reliever Jose Contreras to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He’ll be in camp tomorrow.
Contreras has been around the block quite a bit. The 41 year old Cuban has been in the majors for 10 years, and while he’s been a fairly decent reliever for most of his career, he’s probably nearing the end of the line. He’s...
