Moving On Up: #Pirates top prospect Gerrit Cole will be promoted to @AltoonaCurve & make his Double-A debut on Wednesday 6/20.

— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) June 15, 2012

Not much of surprise here, and honestly, it’s about time. Cole has been posting solid numbers in Bradenton all season, and the two college pitchers that were drafted immediately behind him are already pitching well in AA and AAA respectively.

With High-A Bradenton, Cole was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 13 starts. He struck out 69, walked 21, and allowed 53 hits in 67 innings of work. You certainly can’t complain about those numbers from last year’s #1 overall pick, especially considering the fact that he was probably somewhat off his game while working on some things (as many Pirates pitchers tend to do in the lower minors).

It’ll be interesting to see how Cole does in AA. I’d assume he’ll be there for the rest of the year, and if all goes well he could be in Pittsburgh at some point next season.
