by John Viril— Royals Manager Ned Yost announced today that Chris Getz will open the season at second base ahead of competitor Johnny Giavotella. Given their performances in spring training, this decision was a foregone conclusion. Getz clearly outhit Giavotella during spring training (.940 OPS vs. .683)—a death knell for the roster hopes of hitting-first player like Giavotella. The results of the Giavotella/Getz contest is unlikely to make or break the Royals post-season hopes. Getz is—at best—a 1.0 to 1.5 WAR player in a full season. Giavotella has yet to show he is better than that at the major league level, despite his career minor league triple slash of .308/.380/.443. Playoff aspirations for the 2013 season rest on the revamped pitching staff and breakout hopes for former hot-prospects like Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas. As long as Getz can hold down the second base job with competent defense and be something less than a complete black-hole on offense, then Getz will not hold...

2013 Kansas City Royals: Pessimist Edition

There are a lot of Kansas City Royals fans who are excited for 2013.  The possibility of contending for the division title, a wild card spot, or at least breaking .500 for the first time in 10 seasons has them ready for April 1st.  The man pictured above is not one of them.  There are an equal amount, or more, who are decidedly UN-excited about 2013.  Non-plussed.  Not particularly...

30-1 MLB countdown previews: #9 Royals

The Kansas City Royals have not been to the playoffs since 1985. They have had all losing seasons since 1995 except one (2003 under Tony Pena: 83-79). The organization has had some terrible drafts and not caught a lot of breaks since the early 1990s. However, General Manager Dayton Moore had built a strong farm system bringing prospects like Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alex Gordon...

Time for an Endy Reunion?

News broke yesterday that Endy Chavez was released by the Kansas City Royals, and it made me wonder if the Mets might consider adding him to the mix. It kind of goes against everything this team represents. We are in a youth movement right now. Although Chavez holds a special place in our hearts for one of the best catches we’ve ever seen a Met make, I think it’s just not the...

The Royals Need a Superstar

by John Viril— Royals General Manager Dayton Moore has carefully rebuilt the franchise over the last seven seasons.  He turned a woeful minor league system into one of the best in baseball. He took over an aging roster and turned it into a young and promising one. When he recognized his talent pipeline wasn’t giving him starting pitching, he traded 2012 Minor League Player of...
