Matt Cain struck out nine in seven innings to win his sixth straight start and Buster Posey, Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco homered at Petco Park to lead the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres 8-3 Thursday. Ryan Theriot had four hits for the Giants, who committed four errors but won for the ninth time in 11 games. Leading 4-3, Cain loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on two singles and an error on third baseman Joaquin Arias. Cain escaped the jam by getting pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay to fly out to left and Cameron Maybin to hit into a double play. Cain (7-2) allowed seven hits and three runs - none earned - while walking one. San Francisco won two of three from the Padres (19-39), who have the worst record in the big leagues. San Diego also loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth, and failed to score. In the last two games, the Padres had the bases loaded four times - twice with no outs - and scored only one run. Three of San Francisco's 15 hits were homers...

SF Giants Rumors: Sergio Romo On Pace For Future Arm Troubles

Picture is courtesy of Marko Realmonte. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says (via Twitter) Sergio Romo is throwing sliders 61% of the time and fastballs 31%. Last year Romo threw 54% sliders and 44% fastballs.   The slider is a very hard pitch on the elbow. Romo could be setting himself up for some arm trouble in the future. That’s a lot of stress on the elbow...

SF Giants Rumors: Theriot On Fire, Blanco Power, Can’t Afford Another Injury, Groundhogs Day

In case you haven’t noticed, the San Francisco Giants 2nd base job has been locked down since Ryan Theriot came off the DL. He’s been on fire with the bat. In his last 12 games, Theriot is hitting .432. I would say that’s enough to lockdown a spot for a while.   Blanco Power Outfielder Gregor Blanco has turned into a power hitter over the last 2 games. He’s managed to hit...

Second Freak Injury Recharges Affeldt’s Season

Jeremy Affeldt is left-handed relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Some, including me, have referred to him as a LOOGY (Lefty One-Out GuY) over the years, but that’s not entirely the case. This is Affeldt’s fourth season with the Giants, his eleventh overall in the majors. The only season with the Giants in which he’s been more effective against left-handed batters...

Giants' Sandoval activated after two-homer rehab game

The Panda is done hibernating. The Giants' offense went in the tank in the opener of a weekend series with the Rangers, a 5-0 loss, and Bruce Bochy announced afterward that Pablo Sandoval will join the team for Saturday's game. Sandoval homered twice for Triple-A Fresno on Friday. To make room for Sandoval, who's coming off hamate surgery, the Giants optioned first...

Emergency Bullpen Action

The Giants bullpen has been a strength since Armando Benitez was exorcised.  It had moments of doubt here and there, sure.  But it’s been strength. This is probably just one of those moments.  But geeze, this thing doesn’t look good. It kills me to say that about Steve Edlefsen.  I like him.  A lot.  He had been a consistent ground ball machine.  That slider wasn’t...

Witness ID's Stow beating defendants

A woman who saw part of a brutal attack on a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium has made the first eyewitness identification in court of two defendants charged in the case. Mary Dolores Donely was at the 2011 Opening Day game with family members. She recalled Thursday that she heard profanity and a scuffle before she and her husband ran toward the trouble. She testified...

Postgame Wrap: P-P-P-Petco Power!

Bye, bye baby. Coming into the series the Giants had a season total of 31 home runs, good enough for 29th in the league. 30Th? The Padres, of course, with 30. So color me surprised when the Giants go to Petco and score 5,6, and 8 runs on 13, 11, 15 hits, respectively. And a diminutive non-roster spring training invitee who had two home runs in 836 career plate appearances has two...

Giants 6, Padres 5

Gregor Blanco homered and scored twice and Madison Bumgarner prevailed in a matchup of lefties as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 6-5 on Wednesday. The Giants have won eight of 10 overall and 14 of their last 19 against the Padres, who have the worst record in the majors. Bumgarner (7-4) won his second straight start while Clayton Richard (2-7) lost for the second...

Giants 8, Padres 5

SAN DIEGO -- Four errors by teammates might spell doom for most pitchers. Matt Cain isn't like most pitchers, though, as the San Francisco Giants ace again showed on Thursday en route to his sixth win in a row. Cain struck out nine in seven innings without allowing an earned run, and Buster Posey, Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco homered as the Giants beat the San Diego Padres...

Spotlight Series: Rangers vs Giants (June 8-10)

As the interleague schedule begins full-bore (ignoring the whopping one series played last month), there are a lot of good matchups. Five of the 14 series feature teams with 30 wins apiece facing off. But there is one series that stands out more than the others, pitting the team holding the best record in the American League against a team from the National League with the same...

Streamers Of The Day

Here are some starting pitchers that can help you out with a spot start.  Barry Zito - I know, I know, it’s not 2005. But Barry Zito is 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA and a WHIP of 1.25. He may not be striking many people out (39 in 66.1 innings) but he’s giving quality starts on a regular basis and when it comes to a one day streamer – that’s what you’re looking for. Just try...

Stow beating suspects ordered to trial

Two men have been ordered to stand trial in the brutal beating of a San Francisco Giants fan in the Dodger Stadium parking lot last year.

Factor12 Leaders: Week 9

The Factor12 Rating (F12) is an analytic measurement utilizing league average performance to compare the value of all MLB pitchers. Matt Cain, changeup grip (1) Aroldis Chapman vaults into the number one position this week despite allowing his first earned run of the season on Thursday night. The “Cuban Missile” has struck out an amazing 54 batters in 30 IP and leads MLB with...
