Even a lopsided win over the Dodgers couldn’t stop the Giants from inching closer to elimination.
San Francisco put an eight-spot on the scoreboard and beat their NL West rivals, 8-5 Wednesday night, but the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks also won (8-5 over Pittsburgh) to maintain a 5.5-game lead over the Giants with just six games left.
Brett Pill went 3-for-4 and fellow rookie Justin Christian also had a three-hit game, but the defending World Series champs are simply running out of time.
The Giants, who travel to Phoenix for a three-game series beginning Friday night, had hoped to put themselves in a position to make the desert series meaningful, but one more win by Arizona or one more loss by San Francisco will guarantee the D-backs a tie for the NL West crown.
The wild card race doesn’t look any more promising for the Giants (84-71), who are four games behind the Atlanta Braves.
