The San Francisco Giants tried something new this year. They kept quite a few young, homegrown hitters on their Opening Day roster. Gone were the well-traveled veterans who arrived through free agency, trades and waiver claims, either to play significant roles or be stopgaps. In either case, none fit the Giants' new model of ballplayer: younger, more athletic, homegrown. The roster included not only Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval but Brandon Belt, Brett Pill, Brandon Crawford, Emmanuel Burriss and Hector Sanchez, along with 28-year-old Nate Schierholtz, the oldest of the breed of young farm-system products. So how has it gone? One month into the season, there are sad reminders of last year. The Giants still have hitting issues. They're batting .197 with runners in scoring position, .173 with two outs and runners in scoring position. Close to the bottom of the league on both fronts. For a team that's batting .261 overall -- third in the National League -- tho...

Giants P hurt in weird way
Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt is one of the kings of bizarre injuries. His latest one will make you laugh and scratch your head.
Episode 75: BeltzRgood
Remember that time Brandon Belt was on the field?
Episode 75: BeltzRgood is out!
In the seventy-fifth episode, Thomas and Danny talk to Padres correspondent Levon about the series win, Aubrey Huff’s trip to the DL, Angel Pagan’s hitting streak, Brandon Belt’s disappearance, and Buster Posey.

Aubrey’s career could disappear in a Huff of smoke
Earlier in this still-young baseball season, Giants first baseman Audrey Huff was asked to play second base and seemingly went walkabout during a routine double play grounder. Now, the troubled 35-year old has been placed on the 15-day disabled list for what has been described as anxiety by manager Bruce Bochy.
Anxiety is a psychological problem that affects around 40 million Americans...
Giants' Affeldt hurt playing with son
Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt has, for the second time in just eight months, landed on the disabled list because of a freak injury inside his own home.
Last September his season was ended early when he severely sliced his non-throwing hand separating frozen hamburgers.
This time he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee catching his 4-year-old son, who had jumped...
Someone Wrap Jeremy Affeldt In Bubble Wrap
San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt might want to spend his time away from the ballpark in a bubble.
Seriously.
In September, Affeldt sliced his non-throwing hand to the bone while separating frozen hamburgers (has happened to the best of us). But now, Affeldt’s home life has injured him again.
The left-hander sprained his right knee Saturday night catching his 4-year...
Giants reliever Affeldt out with fluke knee injury
Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt has landed on the disabled list for a non-baseball injury for the second time in less than eight months.
The left-hander sprained his right knee Saturday night when he reached out to catch his 4-year-old son, Walker, as the 60-pound boy jumped off the couch to hug his arriving father.
Affeldt said he heard a pop but didn't think there was anything...
Still no run support for Giants' Cain
Just like old times for Matt Cain. Super pitching, little support. Since 2005, Cain has had the lowest run support in the majors, and it was more of the
same in a 2-1 loss to the Florida Marlins. Cain surrendered two runs in eight innings, and that's
all it took as the San Francisco Giants went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Not much margin of error for Cain...
Bumgarner pitches Giants past Padres
SAN FRANCISCO -- Looking for 2012 to end better than 2011, the Giants need only to look at Madison Bumgarner for a big reason for optimism. The Giants left-hander started last season by losing his first five decisions, but this year he completed April pitching as well as anyone in the Giants' vaunted rotation. By working into the eighth inning in the Giants' 4-1 victory...
Projecting the Series: Giants vs. Marlins
The Giants finished April with a record of 12 and 10, winning 5 of the 7 series that they played. They are currently on pace for about 88 wins, which is about what was expected out of them but given all of this it felt that they played a little bit better than their record currently shows.
Maybe it is just that I got so used to a team that scratched and clawed...
Giants 4, Padres 1
Pablo Sandoval homered to back Madison Bumgarner's fourth straight victory, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Padres 4-1 on Sunday to deny San Diego its first series win of the season.
Joaquin Arias added a two-run triple in the sixth inning to turn a one-run lead into 4-1.
The Giants wasted no time giving Bumgarner (4-1) a lead against Clayton Richard (1-3), a day after...
2012 NL-Only Fantasy Baseball, The Franchise: Huff, Harper and Franchise FAAB
The Franchise has run into the first real dilemma of the season. Aubrey Huff’s trip to the disabled list has left my team without a first base eligible player, and since first base is a desolate hole this year in the NL my best waiver wire options are Lyle Overbay, Travis Ishikawa, and one of the “other” Nationals prospects that was called up this weekend, Tyler Moore...
Marlins-Giants Preview
San Francisco's Matt Cain hasn't allowed a run in two home starts this season. Miami's Ricky Nolasco has been nearly as dominant over his career at AT&T Park.
Runs could be at a premium when the host Giants and sputtering Marlins open a three-game series Tuesday night.
Following a string of subpar pitching performances, San Francisco held San Diego to one run in...
Marlins 2, Giants 1
Giancarlo Stanton homered for the second time in three games to help back Ricky Nolasco's third straight win, and the Miami Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Tuesday night for just their second victory in 10 games.
Hanley Ramirez had an RBI single in the fourth that ended Matt Cain's home scoreless streak to start the season at 21 innings.
Nolasco (3-0) outdueled...
Sir Hits-A-Lot?
Here’s your trivia question…the answer’s at the end of this post.
Q: Hensley Meulens is not the first current Giants who has been knighted. Who was the first?
As for the offense…it’s a long debated point about how effective major league hitting coaches are at helping major league hitters. Bad habits are learned in the minors. And the older any dog gets, the harder...
San Francisco Treat
Ricky Nolasco continued his career success in San Francisco and Heath Bell notched the save in a 2-1 Miami Marlins win on Tuesday over the San Francisco Giants. The Marlins came into the game having dropped eight of their last nine games. The win snapped a two game losing streak for Miami and improved their record to 9-14 on the season.
Nolasco who has excelled in his career...
