Giants Claim Jose Mijares Off Waivers

Earlier today, the Giants acquired left-handed reliever Jose Mijares from the Kansas City Royals via waivers. The Giants simply claimed him off waivers and didn’t have to give up anything in return, so they basically got him for free. Mijares, 27, doesn’t hit free agency until 2015, and he’s actually having a very good season: he’s tossed 38.2 innings across 51 appearances...

Jeff Francoeur steals fan's popcorn

For most Major League Baseball players, they usually wait till after the game to grab a snack or two but Kansas City Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur got some popcorn during the game.It happened in the eighth inning of last night's Chicago White Sox/Kansas City Royals game as Francoeur attempted to chase down a foul ball.Watch as Jeff takes some kernels from one of the fan'...

Royals dump Betancourt after he complains about playing time

The Kansas City Royals' decision to designate infielder Yuniesky Betancourt for assignment was about more than just his .228 batting average and .256 on-base percentage. Betancourt complained to manager Ned Yost about his lack of playing time. That apparently did not go over well. "Yuni did a great job for us, but he was a guy that wanted more playing time," Yost...

Royals' Chen increases reliance on fastball, ends slump

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost had a discussion with left-hander Bruce Chen about being more aggressive on the mound. Chen was winless in his previous seven starts before Tuesday, and his fastball was sitting mostly in the 83-85 mph range. In his previous start, Chen was staked to a 6-0 lead against the Indians, but he was knocked out in the third inning. "His last...

Royals cut ties with veteran infielder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Slumping infielder Yuniesky Betancourt has been cut by the Kansas City Royals after beginning the season as the team's starting second baseman. Betancourt was designated for assignment Sunday following Kansas City's 7-6 victory over the Texas Rangers in 10 innings. To replace him, the Royals selected the contract of infielder Tony Abreu from Triple...

Dayton + Frenchy 4 ever

As I listened to Dayton Moore’s interview with Soren Petro of 810 WHB last week I found many things hard to stomach. For one thing Petro’s questioning was so timid that it started a #ToughQuestionsForDayton hashtag on twitter that sarcastically made fun of him. If we can’t askMoorethe hard questions at this point, when will we? Second, I hated hearingMooremove the goal line...

Mijares' arrival frees Affeldt for possible closing work

The San Francisco Giants got a new reliever Monday when they acquired lefty Jose Mijares off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. There's more to it. The pickup allows Jeremy Affeldt to be available for closing duties if necessary, another sign management isn't 100 percent on board with Santiago Casilla in the ninth-inning role. "With Casilla, trying to give him...

Royals 5, White Sox 2

Bruce Chen outpitched Jake Peavy for his first win in six weeks, Billy Butler hit his career-high 22nd homer and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2 on Tuesday night. The White Sox had won 10 of 13 but saw their lead over Detroit in the AL Central shrink to a half game with the Tigers beating the New York Yankees 6-5 earlier in the night. Gordon Beckham hit his...

On Yuni

I'd just like to make a quick point about Yuniesky Betancourt, who was until recently an infielder on the Royals of Kansas City and who was unceremoniously dumped this very day. (I'm writing on Monday even though you're not reading until Tuesday, so it counts.) First, a refresher for those who forgot about Yuni: Back in 2006-07, Yuni played a lot for Seattle and...

2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 18 Sit Em/Start Em: Scott Diamond Gets The Nod

Salvador Perez Hitters To Start Salvador Perez | Kansas City Royals | (38.3%) – Salvador Perez will be a great option this week for those of you who need depth in the catching position.  This week Perez and the Royals face 4 left-handed starting pitchers.  Perez has been a lefty slayer.  While hitting against lefties this year Perez is hitting .414 with a .452 OBP.  Perez...

Royals take advantage of Rangers' errors in win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Errors by Alberto Gonzalez and Mike Olt in a three-pitch span allowed the tiebreaking run to score in the 10th inning, giving the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 victory over the slumping Texas Rangers on Sunday. With the score 6-6, Michael Kirkman (0-2) walked Billy Butler leading off the 10th. Gonzalez, who entered in the ninth when Elvis Andrus left because...

Holland struggles, poor defense costly in 10th

Derek Holland gave up two runs right away in the 1st inning, and I tried not to panic.  Holland believes he’s pitching well, and I waited for him to show me that. I’m still waiting. OK, so Dutch did have a few good innings.  But they were few and far between.  Between innings when he was giving up runs.  And home runs.  It was just not Derek’s day.  And the interview...

Giants to use closer-by-committe

With the waiver wire addition of reliever Jose Mijares from the Kansas City Royals, the Giants will now use a closer-by-commitee approach with Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt sharing the duties. According to a report by CSN Bay Area beat writer Andy Baggarly, Mijares is another power lefty similar to Affeldt, which opens the door for manager Bruce Bochy to use Affeldt in ninth...

Tuesday Morning Cram Session, 8/7

Yesterday, the Royals...well, shocked is too extreme...surprised a lot of us when they just let lefty reliever Jose Mijares go.  When he was claimed by the Giants on waivers, the Royals didn't put up any kind of a fight, and didn't try to work out a deal to acquire talent in return.  Instead, they just let the Giants have him. Mijares is by no means a bullpen ace.  He...
