San Francisco Giants infielder-outfielder Brett Pill will have right knee surgery Thursday to repair a torn meniscus and is likely to miss 3 to 4 weeks. Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed Wednesday night that Pill would need the procedure, after the skipper earlier made the announcement in Arizona that Pill had injured the knee several weeks ago but tried to play through it. Athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said the expected timeframe for Pill's return is at least a few weeks - meaning it is likely he will be sidelined for opening day April 1 at the Los Angles Dodgers after he made a strong showing to earn a roster spot. Pill, 28, played 48 games for the World Series champions last season, batting .210 with four homers and 11 RBIs. He hit .259 with two homers and seven RBIs in 10 games this spring training.

The Game that Won Chad Gaudin the Giants' Final Bullpen Spot

A relief pitcher's one inning line in a single mid-March Spring Training game boxscore would hardly seem significant. But veteran hurler Chad Gaudin may look back at an inning he put up yesterday that may have been one of the most important of his 10 year Major League career. Because his 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 SO, 0 BB performance against the Cincinnati Reds at their Goodyear...

World Baseball Culture

I’ve never been to a World Baseball Classic finals, so it will be interesting to see how it goes, and how people enjoy it. I expect to see a fair number of international fans.  I just wonder how I’ll tell Netherlands fans from Giants fans. Also, it’d be really, REALLY nice if the U.S. showed up to the party.  Losing David Wright, just about the only hitter for the U.S. who’s...
