The San Francisco Giants selected power-hitting first baseman/third baseman Ricky Oropesa from USC in the third round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft.In his three seasons at USC, Oropesa batted .331 in 170 games (with 167 starts). The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder had 40 doubles, three triples, 40 home runs, 159 RBI and 13 stolen bases to go along with a .596 career slugging percentage and a .409 on-base percentage. Oropesa is tied for fifth place on USC's all-time list with 40 career home runs (tied with Morgan Ensberg, 1995-98). His 159 career RBI place him fifth on USC's all-time list and his slugging percentage ties him for ninth place on USC's all-time list (Morgan Ensberg, 1995-98, and Jeff Clement, 2003-05).
In 2011, for the second straight year, Oropesa led the Trojans in all three triple crown categories, batting .322 (67-for-208) with seven home runs and 44 RBI. He was named to the All-Pac-10 Conference Team after recording 10 doubles, a triple and three stolen bases while posting a .481 slugging percentage and .402 on-base percentage.
Oroposea is not a five-tool player, but he brings serious plus power to the table. In fact, the consensus from baseball scouts seems to be that nobody in college can really rival his pretty, yet powerful stroke at this point.
