The San Francisco Giants have signed infielder Joseph Panik, their first-round pick in the 2011 draft.

Panik, a shortstop from St. John's University, was selected with the 29th overall choice of the draft. He became the first middle infielder chosen by the Giants with their first pick since Royce Clayton in 1988.

The 20-year-old left-handed hitter led the Big East Conference this season with 60 runs scored and a .509 on-base percentage, while tying for the league's highest batting average at .398. He led the Red Storm with 10 home runs and 21 stolen bases, while also knocking in 57 runs.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
