The Giants lost a Joaquin to the Nationals yesterday. Waldis Joaquin was designated for assignment about a month ago, so Washington just swooped in and signed him to a minor-league deal. Joaquin put up a 1.17 K/BB in 50 innings in Fresno. So the Giants did what any clever organization would do. They went out and got a better Joaquin: Joaquin Arias. Well…maybe he’s better. Arias was once a five-tool talent. He was once a top-100 prospect. This one time, he was traded along with Alfonso Soriano for one of the greatest players of all time. That was all about seven and a half years ago, though. More recently, he was traded straight-up for Jeff Francoeur. And that really says all you need to know about how he’s progressed in these past seven and a half years. Jeff Francoeur. But Arias, interestingly enough, is still only 27 years old. Here’s what I know about the Arias of Christmas Present, from an Amazin’ Avenue post that was written one year ago: He’...

Bonds escapes prison term, sentenced to house arrest, two years' probation

Former major league slugger Barry Bonds escaped a prison term on a felony charge of obstruction of justice. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston on Friday sentenced baseball's home run king to two years' probation, 30 days of house arrest and 250 hours of community service. Bonds also was fined $4,000 by Illston for his conviction on obstructing a grand jury investigation...

#46: Is Madison Bumgarner underrated?

On June 21 of last season, Madison Bumgarner went out and exploded — but not in a good way. That day he last just 1/3 of an inning but faced 10 batters, nine of whom got hits and eight of whom scored. That outing did two things: ballooned his ERA from 3.21 to 4.06 and set up months of us trying to tell everyone how criminally underrated Bumgarner was. Question 46 in our top...

Giants Re-Sign Mota

With the addition of Mike Fontenot, the Giants looked done in terms of free agency. But they were not and they are now close to signing reliever Guillermo Mota to a one-year, $1 million deal. No, it's not the sexiest deal. But it's, um, something? Mota and the Giants, per MLB.com, agreed to terms and are simply waiting on a physical to bring the reliever back for a third...

Bonds gets probation, home confinement

A federal judge on Friday sentenced Barry Bonds to two years of probation, 30 days of home confinement and 250 hours of community service for his obstruction of justice conviction, FOX News Channel reported. The largest federal criminal investigation into sports doping began more than nine years ago with a tax agent digging through the trash of the now notorious Bay Area Laboratory...

Giants Re-Sign Guillermo Mota

John Heymen of CBSSports.com and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle are reporting the San Francisco Giants have re-signed the right-handed reliever Guillermo Mota to a one-year $1 million deal. Mota served as a back-of the bullpen reliever who pitched long, sometimes meaningless innings. He throws hard, strikes out a good chunk of the batters he faces, and he sweats a lot....

Giants re-sign veteran RHP Mota to one-year deal

The San Francisco re-signed veteran reliever Guillermo Mota to a one-year deal worth $1 million on Wednesday. Mota, 38, posted a 2-2 mark with a 3.81 ERA in 52 appearances last season. A 13-year veteran, Mota has posted a 39-44 mark with 10 saves and a 3.91 ERA in his career with the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Milwaukee...

Eli’s coming (back)?

Well, that didn’t last long. Quicker than a Kim Kardashian divorce, the Giants are close to reuniting themselves with catcher Eli Whiteside, who they non-tendered Monday night, allowing the 32-year old to become a free agent. When Giants GM Brian Sabean said the team would be open to re-signing him, I thought it was just Sabes being nice. Nope. He really is open to re-signing...

Beaten Giants fan speaks during video interview

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco Giants fan nearly beaten to death on opening day has spoken on camera for the first time since the attack.

Buster Posey's injury can't persuade Joe Torre to consider rule changes to safeguard catchers

But the San Francisco Giants aren't finished lobbying to change the mind of MLB's vice president for on-field operations

VIDEO: Bryan Stow speaks on camera

Stow is still rehabbing in a San Jose facility. When most Giants fans hear the name Bryan Stow, they visualize a man who was beaten and left for dead after a baseball game at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day last season. If you’re like me, in your mind’s eye, you may see Stow as the silent victim of a terrible hate crime and a man whose face — public as it has been...

A preliminary hearing for Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood, the two men accused in an assault on a San Francisco Giants fan after an opening day game at Dodger Stadium, will probably occur in February. Bryan Stow Case: Timeline, Court Documents, Key Events on Night of Attack At a court proceeding Thursday morning, a progress report in the case was set for Jan. 17. It's likely...
