Mlbtraderumors.com reported the Giants have traded backup catcher Chris Stewart to they New York Yankees for RHP George Kontos.

Stewart, 30, has been competing for the giants backup catcher position with Eli Whiteside (who missed the final cut) and rookie Hector Sanchez. Now, he returns to New York where he played one game for in 2008.

Last season for the Giants, Stewart was a terrific defensive backstop, but not so much an offensive threat. His line of .204/.283/.309 with three home runs (including his first in the big leagues) and 10 RBI.

The Giants received 26-year-old Kontos, who has spent the last six years in the Yankees farm system. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 amateur draft, Kontos has primarily played a righty reliever role in his career.

Last season in 89.1 innings pitched in AAA Scranton, Kontos recorded a 2.62 ERA and a 1.097 WHIP. His 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.6 walks per nine innings last year made up for a tidy 3.5 K:BB ratio.

Most likely starting this season in AAA Fresno, Kontos adds some pitching depth the Giants were starting to lack in their farm system.
