Rare is the day in sport when everybody wins when more than 50000 fans players stadium workers and all the rest are treated to goosebumps and tears that they want to spill as two great athletes are honored for all the joy they brought. The Yankees and their fans will remember a brilliant Sunday of emotion long after they forget that the Giants won 2-1. Imagine the memories on the winning side too: Sergio Romo standing on Mariano Rivera's mound and saving the win on Mariano Rivera Day. Bronx native Juan Perez saving it as well by throwing out Robinson Cano at home to end the eighth inning slamming his hand on the grass in exultation then singling off the great closer in the ninth. Ehire Adrianza breaking up Andy Pettitte's no-hitter in the sixth with his first major-league home run. Yusmeiro Petit dueling Pettitte the all-time leader in postseason wins in the lefty's final start at Yankee Stadium. Javier Lopez getting two monumental strikeouts to preserve a 1-1 tie after seven. And doing all that in an atmosphere that rivaled a World Series game made so by a sellout crowd of 49197 who saw a rich pregame ceremony to honor Rivera that lasted 50 minutes and was worth every minute. "Great day" manager Bruce Bochy said. "For the guys to be part of this day is something they'll remember facing Pettitte and the guy who has a chance to be the greatest closer of all time." A "chance to be?" No Romo said "I don't think there will ever be another Mariano." How did the Giants closer not hyperventilate as he retired the Yankees 1-2-3 in this place after Rivera pitched 1 2/3 innings when New York was behind? "I was telling myself warming up that I'm going to get to pitch at Yankee Stadium" Romo said. "Obviously I didn't get a chance to see Babe Ruth play or Lou Gehrig or Joe DiMaggio. To be able to compete on the same mound against Mariano - he toed the rubber before I did today - was pretty sweet for me." All those legends played on the old Yankee Stadium but you know what Romo meant and when that stadium was across the street there were ball fields on the site of the current stadium.
