In this day and age it seems as though everyone has a sense of entitlement or is looking for a hand-out from somewhere. That’s why I found it incredibly refreshing to hear about a man who is so humble and honest about his own self-worth, that he is willing to turn down millions of dollars he was promised just because he doesn’t feel that he deserves it. Gil Meche, 32-year old pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, announced his retirement last week, walking away from the last of a 5-year, $55 million contract.
Meche, a divorced father of three, began playing Major League Baseball in 1999 with the Seattle Mariners. The career of the right-hander was plagued with injuries … in February of 2001, he underwent arthroscopic surgery to partially repair a frayed rotator cuff; in October of the same year it was his AC joint.
