In a day and age when the word retirement is tossed around liberally by athletes, it is refreshing to see Gil Meche, who made the announcement that he was retiring from the game of baseball.
The 32 year-old pitcher made the decision on Tuesday evening to call it quits after being limited to 10 starts in 2010 due to shoulder problems.
Instead of taking the option to have shoulder surgery and miss out on the 2011 season, Meche made the mature decision to retire from the sport that he loved.
The biggest shocker to come out of this unexpected retirement was that Meche was going to forgo the final year of his contract and forfeit $12 million.
His response was “I just thought it was the right thing to do,” when it comes to his inability to live up to the contract he had signed.
If this holds true and he did forfeit the money, Meche will do more for the game than anyone else could. Maybe this would open the eyes to some of the players in the game and show them just how big of an act this is by Meche.
TASF is sure there are naysayers out there that Meche will find a way to get his money.
Or even worse that he may be pulling another Favre where he can void out his contract and sign somewhere else.
If he is true to his word and stays retired, then there are other athletes out there who could take lessons from Meche.
