As we await the new of who exactly is going to make up the backend of the Yankees rotation, manager Joe Girardi confirmed what most of us already suspected today – that his opening day starter will be CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda will pitch the second game of the season, according to Kieran Darcy of ESPNNewYork.com.

As Darcy points out, this lines Kuroda up to start the Yankees home opener against the Angels a week later. However, with an off-day scheduled it also lines up whoever the No. 3 starter is to start on that day as well. It makes sense that the Yankees would go with the veteran Kuroda over Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova, or Michael Pineda, but nothing is set in stone (technically Freddy Garcia is included in this group).

Pettitte getting close to pitching in a game

A quick Andy Pettitte update here. Pettitte had thrown in his own words six or seven bullpens before showing up to camp, he’s done a few since showing up to camp and he has now thrown a couple of bullpens. The next step is getting him into games, but the Yankees are being very cautious with Pettitte and haven’t scheduled anything yet. “We are taking it day by day with that...

2 Big Men: Comparing Pineda’s rookie year to Sabathia’s

Looking over the Yankees 2012 roster there are two pitchers that might jump right out at you.  Upon a quick sizing up, they seem to be cut from the same cloth.  One is a young, up and coming 23-year-old named Michael Pineda. The other is battle-tested 31-year-old veteran CC Sabathia.  It could be claimed to be wishful thinking that the young Pineda is headed down the same trail...

Why Taking Cabral Makes the Most Sense

The Yankees roster has pretty much been set since the start of spring. They have 13 positional players and 11 pitchers locked. The final probably comes down to the Yankees taking one of the two situational lefties: Clay Rapada or Cesar Cabral. Originally I thought it would be a far easier choice, as Rapada only has a little over a year of service time and wouldn’t be able to reject...

Andy Pettitte throws BP, simulated game

Andy Pettitte is increasing his workload by throwing in a simulated game, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi thinks the 39-year-old left-hander could pitch in a spring training game next week. Pettitte came out of retirement by agreeing to a minor league contract March 16. He threw 20 pitches in batting practice Tuesday before making 13 more pitches to four batters in a simulated...

Yankees release Preston Mattingly

The New York Yankees have released Preston Mattingly, who had agreed to a minor league contract in January. The 24-year-old son of former Yankees star and current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly had been playing for Double-A Trenton in spring training games. The Yankees confirmed the move on Tuesday. Mattingly hit .232 with five doubles, five home runs and 19 RBIs in...

TAMPA The Tampa Bay Rays have reason to feel optimistic about a rotation that now features a pair of heat-throwing lefthanders in David Price and Matt Moore. Rumor: Phillies interested in Ramiro Pena

The Philadelphia Phillies have had trouble keeping their middle infielders healthy and have expressed interest in the Yankees’ Ramiro Pena, according to George King of the NY Post. Chase Utley is expected to start the season on the DL. If the Yankees did make a trade and send Pena to Philly he wouldn’t fetch anybody of much value. The best that could be hoped for would be...

Yankees sign Jack Cust

The New York Yankees have signed Jack Cust to a minor league deal, Sweeny Murti of WFAN reports. Cust signed a one-year deal with the Astros in January but was released by them earlier this week. Cust averaged 28 home runs from 2007-09 and was looking to re-establish his offense with the Astros and prior to that the Phillies and Mariners but has been unsuccessful. Cust hit .213...

Yanks Sign Jack Cust

Clearly the Yankees are a little concerned with Ibanez's struggles and bat speed and felt the need to pick up a little insurance at the DH spot. It's another quality trash-heap signing by Cashman. Cust hit just .213/.344/.329 with 3 HR and 23 RBI in 225 at-bats for Seattle, but in 2010 he did have one of hit better overall offensive seasons. That season year he hit .272...
