Something that has kind of emerged lately is that David Phelps, Adam Warren, and D.J. Mitchell are very much in the running for a roster spot to start the season with the Yankees.

Warren made a start the other day against the Red Sox and Phelps and Mitchell both pitched Thursday against the Orioles. The point is these guys are getting a real look. The way Joe Girardi talks it even sounds like the Yankees are finally ready to acknowledge that they are ready now.

“What’s impressed me most about all three of them is the difference in Spring Training compared to last year,” Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “Last year, at times, I thought they almost looked like they were a little overwhelmed or a little nervous to make a mistake. I don’t question that now.

”What I’ve seen from some of the innings that these guys have put up, there’s a totally different attitude from all three of them. That’s the great thing; the power of going to Spring Training before you have a chance of really making the club.”

The Yankees of course aren’t considering any of these guys for the rotation. Their best bet is as long-men out of the bullpen similar to the way Hector Noesi broke into the big leagues last year. The Yankees even briefly considered trying Mitchell as a short reliever before abandoning the idea.

“Because if (Mitchell, Phelps or Warren) were to go with us, it would be more of a long guy than back-to-back,” Girardi told Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

The Yankees have to start making moves with these guys. They already have 421 combined innings at Triple-A, that rotation is full, and the Double-A rotation is full and eventually guys are going to need promotions. They either have to be promoted or traded and soon.

Yanks might have really blown it with trade for Pineda

There was a divide with New York Yankees fans earlier in the year when it was announced that stud hitting prospect Jesus Montero was being traded to the Mariners for Michael Pineda. While Pineda was 5th in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2011, his end of the season was less than stellar, while the call up of Montero went swimmingly well. He showed Yankee fans his quick bat speed...

Quote: Feliciano thinks he’s going to pitch in 2012

The Yankees signing of Pedro Feliciano looked like a bad idea from the start. He was abused for years by the Mets, often pitching on four consecutive days or more, but the Yankees signed him anyway and he proceeded to immediately land himself on the DL with a serious shoulder injury. He put off surgery until September as he unsuccessfully attempted to just rehab the shoulder....

The Yankees name their starting rotation

With Michael Pineda expected to start the season on the DL with shoulder tendinitis, the rest of the Yankees starting rotation fell into place. CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda are the No. 1 and 2 starters as expected. Phil Hughes will be behind them as the No. 3, and Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia slide in as the No. 4 and 5 guys, according to Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com. ...

Read: Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler interviewed by Fortune

The guys in the Yankees front office who operate under Brian Cashman usually go unnoticed, but a few of them are really good at their jobs so it is interesting to read about them. Shelley DuBois of Fortune magazine recently interviewed assistant general manager Billy Eppler. It’s a good interview and even though DeBois isn’t a sports journalist, meaning she doesn’t go into...

Yankees 2012 minor league roster assignments

The Yankees have begun to set their minor league rosters. They won’t be completely official until the major league team breaks camp and sends everybody back down, but here is where they are so far. All of these rosters are via Josh Norris of the Trentonian’s Minor Matters blog. EMPIRE STATE YANKEES (AAA) PITCHERS: Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Juan Cedeno, Manny Delcarmen...

Cabral has significant elbow injury

UPDATE: David Waldstein of the NY Times reports that Cabral has suffered a stress fracture to the left olecranon bone which is located on the tip of his elbow. He says there is no timetable for his return at this point, but it seems like that could be a 2-3 month process. TJS isn’t necessary. ORIGINAL POST: So it turns out that Cesar Cabral‘s injury news might have been...

Cesar Cabral suffers elbow pain, MRI next

This is where the saying, “these things tend to sort themselves out,” comes from. First Michael Pineda reveals that he pitched through shoulder pain Friday night, then Cesar Cabral was seen with his arm in a sling and will undergo an MRI after experiencing pain in his elbow, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. If the worst happens here and Cabral needs Tommy John Surgery...

In hindsight Pineda trade was not necessary

Count me among the people who thought that Brian Cashman had pulled a heist at the time of the Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi for Michael Pineda and Jose Campos deal. Hindsight is 20/20, but knowing what we know now it makes less sense. The Yankees went on to sign Hiroki Kuroda and Andy Pettitte, Noesi has been lights out in Spring Training and Montero has been Montero. Phil...

Yankees Finding New Ways to Kill Young Pitching

So reports indicated that Michael Pineda is pitching for a rotation spot today. What I thought was a silly media meme to make it through the demands of spring training news content has become a reality. Apparently the velocity concerns of the media are also shared by the Yankees. Despite the wicked slider and changeup, the 89-93 mph fastball is concerning the brass. I always hate...

Classic Yankees: Luis Arroyo

1961 saw some great feats by various Yankees. Roger Maris’ 61 HR, surpassing Babe Ruth’s 60; the combined total of 115 between Maris and Mickey Mantle broke the Ruth/Gehrig teammate record of 107. Whitey Ford went 25-4, 3.21 and broke Babe Ruth’s World Series record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Elston Howard hit .348. Johnny Blanchard had a great season off...

Why So Orange, Russell Martin? Canada's Cold Got Ya Down?

Short-printed and colored parallels are some of my favorite cards, especially when combined with a card that is already chromed out. They're not always cheap, but when they can be had for a great deal, they make for some of the most enjoyable pickups and maildays. Luckily, Russell Martin is an affordable player to (super)collect. From 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft comes this sweeeeet...

Yankees Spring Training Game 29: Home Runs Power the Win

New York Yankees 11 — Houston Astros 9   Five home runs helped power the Yankees to an 11-9 win over the Houston Astros in today’s game. Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez each hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning to play a role in the win. Prospect Dante Bichette Jr. also [...]

For 40-ish baseball stars, these are good ol' days

Mariano Rivera kneeled in his spring training clubhouse and stretched out flat on the floor, his white No. 42 - matching his age - pressed to the gray carpet. He stretched his right foot out and slowly drew it back over his left shoulder. He switched sides and then swung both legs over his head at the same time. Writhing for about 10 minutes, he looked more like a contortionist...

Astros and Yanks combine for nine homers

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez each had two-run homers, 19-year-old Dante Bichette Jr. connected on the first two pitches he saw this spring and the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 11-9 in a game Saturday shortened to eight innings by rain. The Yankees and Astros combined for nine home runs. Jordan Lyles, bidding for one of two open spots in the...
