Something that has kind of emerged lately is that David Phelps, Adam Warren, and D.J. Mitchell are very much in the running for a roster spot to start the season with the Yankees.
Warren made a start the other day against the Red Sox and Phelps and Mitchell both pitched Thursday against the Orioles. The point is these guys are getting a real look. The way Joe Girardi talks it even sounds like the Yankees are finally ready to acknowledge that they are ready now.
“What’s impressed me most about all three of them is the difference in Spring Training compared to last year,” Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “Last year, at times, I thought they almost looked like they were a little overwhelmed or a little nervous to make a mistake. I don’t question that now.
”What I’ve seen from some of the innings that these guys have put up, there’s a totally different attitude from all three of them. That’s the great thing; the power of going to Spring Training before you have a chance of really making the club.”
The Yankees of course aren’t considering any of these guys for the rotation. Their best bet is as long-men out of the bullpen similar to the way Hector Noesi broke into the big leagues last year. The Yankees even briefly considered trying Mitchell as a short reliever before abandoning the idea.
“Because if (Mitchell, Phelps or Warren) were to go with us, it would be more of a long guy than back-to-back,” Girardi told Chad Jennings of the Journal News.
The Yankees have to start making moves with these guys. They already have 421 combined innings at Triple-A, that rotation is full, and the Double-A rotation is full and eventually guys are going to need promotions. They either have to be promoted or traded and soon.
