From Chad Jennings:Girardi said intentionally loading the bases in the first inning was because of the matchup and because of the opposing starter. CC Sabathia had great numbers against Carlos Pena, and Girardi expected a low-scoring game against James Shields. “Sean Rodriguez has hit (Sabathia) hard,” Girardi explained. “And it’s not something I’ll do a lot in the first inning with CC, but as I said, Shields has been pretty tough on us. … I felt good about CC getting him out, but it didn’t work.”If you're wondering, here was CC's take:“I knew I had some success off him, but like I said, it’s a lefty so I knew if I make the right pitches then we get out of it. … It was a lefty, so I felt like it was the right move.”The problem I had with the move (before the home run happened by the way) goes beyond batting average against and any kind of stat. I just feel that you don't manage games in April like it's October. It's far too early in the season for this kind of crap.

Yankees play with Harlem Globetrotters

CC Sabathia’s appearance at a Harlem Globetrotters game could have been some foreshadowing for his disappointing opening day start. During a break in their preseason schedule, New York Yankees CC Sabathia, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher participated in a Harlem Globetrotter’s showcase. CC struggled with this version of baseball, as one of the Globetrotters launched...

Opening Day For The Yankees: One Disastrous Thing

A lot of bad things happened during the Yankees Opening Day loss to the Rays yesterday, but only one thing really stood out for me as being disastrous. It wasn't all the men left on base: 12 in total, with the bases left loaded in the 4th and 7th inning and being 2-11 with RISP. That's bad but, they did score 6 runs so I wouldn't call it disastrous. It wasn't Mariano...

The Yankee beat: D-Rob’s charity, No. 1 in MLB, Red Sox death

The winter is finally over and the Yankees have returned to action. But they lost 7-6 to the Rays when Mariano Rivera blew a save, CC Sabathia wasn’t sharp, and Joe Girardi made some questionable moves. Here is what the blogosphere was talking about today. Bleeding Yankee Blue is selling t-shirts and giving $1 from each shirt to David Robertson‘s charity, High Socks for...

Price looks to lead Rays past Yankees

In his return to the Tampa Bay Rays, Carlos Pena got the team's 2012 opener off to a strong start. He finished it in even more spectacular fashion. After Pena lifted the Rays to a walk-off win over the New York Yankees, the AL East rivals continue their season-opening series Saturday night at Tropicana Field. Pena, who spent four of his best seasons with the Rays before playing...

Oh No, Mo! Yankee Season Opener a Disappointment

Despite a list of suitable characters–CC Sabathia, David Robertson, and Mariano Rivera—the 2012 Yankee season failed to begin with a storybook ending. The season opener was peppered with more anomalies than the Yankees would have preferred.  A subpar performance from Sabathia and an uncharacteristic blown save by Rivera added up to disappointment in Tampa for the Yankees Friday...

Rays beat Yankees on Pena's walkoff hit

Carlos Pena hit an early grand slam off CC Sabathia, then completed a ninth-inning comeback with an RBI single off Mariano Rivera that lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a season-opening 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday. Rivera (0-1) had been 60 of 61 in save chances against the Rays. But after Desmond Jennings opened the ninth with a single against baseball's career...

For One Day Only, Mariano Rivera's ERA Is 54

Check it out.And Carlos Pena has five five RBIs. That puts him on pace to catch pretty much everybody. It was a wild night in Tampa.Maddon also called for a suicide squeeze against Dave Robertson in the eighth, but Jose Molina missed the sign and swung, dangerously hitting a foul ball as Rodriguez charged home.

Rays beat Yankees 7-6 on opening day

The Tampa Bay Rays (1-0) beat the New York Yankees (0-1) 7-6, today at Tropicana Field. Pitching: CC Sabathia got off to a bad start in the first inning giving up a grand slam to Carlos Pena and pitched fine after that. He went 6 innings, gave up 5 runs (2 HR's) and struck out 7 batters. Rafael Soriano and David Robertson both combined 2 scorless innings and 4 strikeouts...

Thoughts on the Yankees roster as we wait for the 1st pitch

At around 3:00 pm today, James Shields of the pesky Tampa Bay Rays will deliver the first pitch of the season to New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, and let me tell you, I couldn’t be more excited to face a guy who threw eleven complete games last year. But before I get into the nitty gritty that is inspecting the 2012 Yankees Opening Day roster, let me begin by just quickly...

Rules to save MLB managers from themselves

If there is one word that can be used to sum up the MLB Opening Week action it would be "overmanaging."  We saw some truly head-scratching decisions from the skippers the last few days.  Intentionally walking Sean Rodriguez to get to Carlos Pena.  Sacrifice bunting with the second batter of the game.  Chris Perez continuing to be a MLB closer.  All of these are prime...

Tampa Bay Rays record another dramatic victory over the New York Yankees in season opener

The Tampa Bay Rays opened the 2012 regular season in the same fashion they finished the 2011 regular season-with a dramatic victory over the New York Yankees. Last season, the Rays defeated the Yankees with a walk-off home run by 3B Evan Longoria. On Friday, Tampa Bay defeated the Yankees with their last as bat as well despite the ramifications of the game being far...

Weekly game thread: Apr. 6 – Apr. 8

If you are reading this, you probably already know that Bronx Baseball Daily is a great place to get Yankees news, rumors, and analysis. However, most of you probably turn to ESPN, MLB.com, or Yahoo Sports when it comes to getting scores. So this season we are abandoning pre and post-game posts for most games and instead will do a weekly game thread. After this week, these game...

Tampa Bay Rays hang on to defeat New York Yankees

This offseason, finding players which would add offensive firepower to the Tampa Bay Rays lineup was a priority. After two games, so far so good. The Tampa Bay Rays added DH Luke Scott to the lineup as well as bringing back 1B Carlos Pena. In the first two games of the season, the duo have combined to drive in nine runs. For the second straight day, the Tampa Bay Rays...
