The Gold Glove Awards were announced on ESPN late last night (since when do they play college football on Tuesday night?). The good news is that Derek Jeter lost to Erick Aybar. In fact, the voting looks very good this season. Alex Gordon beating out Brett Gardner is a bit of a surprise, but Gordon did rank high in the FanGraphs ratings. In general, a very good job by the voters.
I was surprised by Placido Polanco’s performance. Defense is a young man’s game, and Polanco was a second baseman for a long time. Nice to see the voters recognize his outstanding year with the glove.

Philadelphia Phillies Placido Polanco won his 3rd career Gold Glove Award and became the first player in history to win a Gold Glove at two different infield positions.
Philadelphia Phillies 3rd baseman Placido Polanco won his third gold glove last night. Polanco started 118 games for the Phillies at 3rd base and had a .977 fielding percentage, tops among NL third baseman.
Erick Aybar was far from home, in the Far East, when he learned that he was a Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner for the first time. The Angels' shortstop was overwhelmed when the news arrived.
Last night, Major League Baseball announced that Placido Polanco has won his third Rawlings Gold Glove Award, this time as a third baseman. His previous Gold Gloves were won as a second baseman of the Detroit Tigers in 2007 and 2009. With his win, he becomes the second man to win a Gold Glove at multiple positions, joining Darin Erstad.
Polanco, starting in 115 games, committed...
Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco won the National League Gold Glove for third base. This is the third time he has won a Gold Glove and he became the second player to win Gold Gloves at two positions. The first guy to do it was Darrin Erstad of the Angels, who won Gold [...]
I’d like to give a huge shout out to Phillies 3rd baseman Placido Polanco for winning his 3rd Golden Glove. According to Philly Burbs:
The winners were announced Tuesday and Polanco was the only Phillies player to walk away with the trophy recognizing best defensive players at their respective positions. It was Polanco’s third Gold Glove award, his first with the Phillies...
A Bronx cop has come to the defense of an indicted union official who helped give the cop's gravely-ill son a day the boy won't forget - a meeting with his hero, Yankee Derek Jeter.
Officer Herbert Oquendo said Jeter and the rest of the Bronx Bombers treated his son Jared just like a teammate when they met him in April 2010.
What do Darin Erstad and Placido Polanco have in common that set them apart from all other players in baseball's history? No, Polly wasn't a college punter for Nebraska like Erstad. Rather, they are the only two that have ever won Gold Gloves at multiple positions. Erstad was a tremendous outfielder and decent at 1st base too (3 GG in his career). Polly picks it well all over...
Earlier in the week, The Fielding Bible Awards were announced. Voted on by a panel of experts, they tend to be a better representation of the best glovemen in the game than the Gold Gloves. Derek Jeter, for example, has never won a Bible Award.
Last night MLB took the somewhat surprising step of announcing the shortlist for this year’s Gold Glove awards. I assume the three players...
The Fielding Bible awards are out. Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson both won in the outfield, both products of the Yankees system.
