Two highly touted prospects made their major league debuts this week, and both made excellent first impressions. Pitcher Matt Harvey struck out eleven Diamondbacks in 5-1/3 innings in the Mets 3-1 victory, and in doing so set a new team record for strikeouts by a starting pitcher in his first MLB start (the previous record of eight was shared by Hall of Famer Tom Seaver and Bill Denehy).
Meanwhile outfielder Starling Marte hit the very pitch of the game for a home run to set the pace in the Pirates 5-3 win over the Astros in Houston. Marte is now the 28th player in MLB history to hit a home run on the first pitched he faced (complete list here). Marte also singled in the top of the 5th inning for his second and final hit of the night.
Surprisingly, Harvey also collected two hits in his only two trips to the plate, including his first extra-base hit, a double in the top of the 2nd inning
