Found July 28, 2012 on The Baseball Page:
Two highly touted prospects made their major league debuts this week, and both made excellent first impressions. Pitcher Matt Harvey struck out eleven Diamondbacks in 5-1/3 innings in the Mets 3-1 victory, and in doing so set a new team record for strikeouts by a starting pitcher in his first MLB start (the previous record of eight was shared by Hall of Famer Tom Seaver and Bill Denehy). Meanwhile outfielder Starling Marte hit the very pitch of the game for a home run to set the pace in the Pirates 5-3 win over the Astros in Houston. Marte is now the 28th player in MLB history to hit a home run on the first pitched he faced (complete list here). Marte also singled in the top of the 5th inning for his second and final hit of the night. Surprisingly, Harvey also collected two hits in his only two trips to the plate, including his first extra-base hit, a double in the top of the 2nd inning Read more great articles at baseballsdeep Play Our Fantasy Game Today and Try...

Scouting Report: Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey made his MLB debut last night for the New York Mets, earning a victory in Arizona.  Harvey struck out 11 DBacks in just 5 1/3 innings without allowing a run.  The kid proved he was ready for The Show after months of anticipation from the Mets fan base.  What took so long, Sandy? Harvey is clearly a power pitcher.  He throws a heavy, low to mid-90s fastball out of...

D-Backs can't solve Mets' Harvey in MLB debut

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks understood that Mets rookie right-hander Matt Harvey had a quality repertoire, but there was a matching belief that Harvey might bring a case of butterflies into his major league debut Thursday. The stuff was all that showed up. Harvey set a modern major league record by striking out at least 10 and getting two hits in his first start, using a 98 mph fastball...

First Pitch: Remember When Marte Was the Answer?

Remember a few weeks ago when Starling Marte was the answer for the Pirates? People were calling for him to be promoted to the majors to help the offense for the remainder of the year. Now after four games there are suggestions that the Pirates should trade their top hitting prospect. The rumors came out that the Pirates inquired on Shin-Soo Choo, and that Starling Marte would have...

Starling Marte – One Pitch and Gone!(Photo: deadspin.com) Welcome to the Majors, Starling Marte! The Pittsburgh Pirates organization and its fans have been anxiously awaiting the Major League arrival of their prospect who hails from the Dominican Republic. Matt Harvey’s fastball, Josh Edgin’s relief, R.A. Dickey’s streak snapped

Matt Harvey sure looked ready for prime time last night. In his major league debut, Harvey pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, did not allow a run and broke Tom Seaver’s franchise record for strikeouts in a debut. And for good measure, Harvey went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double. He finished the night with 11 strikeouts and it was fun to watch a Mets starter blow the ball past opposing...

Matt Harvey Makes Mets Debut Tonight

Former Bisons pitcher Matt Harvey will make his MLB debut tonight in Arizona when the New York Mets take on the Diamondbacks. He’ll go up against Wade Miley who is 11-5 with a 3.02 ERA on this year in Arizona. Harvey, the 7th overall pick of the 2010 MLB Draft was 7-5 in Buffalo this year with a 3.68 ERA. As a highly regarded prospect, Harvey was constantly the topic of discussion...

Pirates Notebook: Marte Impressive in Debut; Jones Hitting Lefties

Starling Marte was impressive in his Major League debut. Manager Clint Hurdle always gives the same message to rookies when they first arrive to the big leagues — respect everything and fear nothing. The message must have resonated with the 23-year-old Startling Marte in his Major League debut on Thursday in Houston. Because that’s exactly what he did. The outfielder stepped...

Pirates prospect Marte goes yard in first MLB at-bat

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 14 games over .500. It’s almost August. A.J. Burnett is now 12-3. They sit just two back of the Reds in the NL Central. Andrew McCutchen is a franchise player and MVP candidate. Can things get any better for the Bucos? Wait, is this happening? The answers to both those questions may be yes. Starling Marte seems to symbolize that hope and optimism. Marte...

Making his Major League debut, leading off in left field, Marte homered to left center field on the very first pitch he ever saw in the big leagues. That was just the beginning of what would...

Marte to Make Debut; Hernandez Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates made several moves on Thursday. They optioned outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was added to the 25-man roster. Rodriguez was acquired from the Houston Astros on Saturday night in exchange for three prospects. His next scheduled start is TBA. Rodriguez last started on Monday. Prospect Starling Marte was also officially...

The great prognosticator that is first at-bat success

As you no doubt heard, read or saw, Pirates top prospect Starling Marte homered on the very first pitch he ever saw as a major leaguer.  This, of course, means he will be the greatest player ever.  Don't believe me?  Let's compare the Hall of Fame-bound Marte to the other young stud hitters that have been taking the league by storm this season. First we have wunderkind...

Mets 3, Diamondbacks 1

Matt Harvey dazzled in his major league debut, holding Arizona to three hits and striking out 11 over 5 1-3 innings in the New York Mets' 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday night.
