Dwight Gooden didn't oversleep when he missed a parade celebrating the New York Mets' World Series championship in 1986.

Instead, Gooden said in an interview scheduled to air on ESPN's "E-60" on Wednesday night that he was sitting in an apartment of a drug dealer with people he didn't know, too stoned and too paranoid to join the celebration in Manhattan.

The 1984 National League Rookie of the Year and 2005 Cy Young Award winner, Gooden said he first tried cocaine during the 1986 season.

"And it was love at first sight, unfortunately," he said.

Gooden detailed how he was partying in the hours leading up to the parade, eventually winding up in the projects on Long Island.

"Then you know what time you have to be at the ballpark to go into the city for the parade, but I'm thinking, 'OK, I got time.' And the clocks, I mean the rooms are spinning," he said. "I said, 'OK, I'll leave in another hour.' Then the next thing you know the parade's on and I'm watching the parade on TV.

"Here I am in the projects in a drug dealer's apartment with guys I don't even know, with drugs in the house, watching it. It's a horrible feeling."

Gooden never again attained the heights of his magnificent 1985 season, when he went 24-4 and led the league in strikeouts (268) and ERA (1.53).

He did throw a no-hitter with the New York Yankees in 1996 after sitting out the entire 1995 season because of a drug suspension and eventually retired in 2000.

Gooden has been arrested numerous times since he left the game. In April, he was sentenced to five years of probation for driving under the influence of drugs while driving his 5-year-old son to school.
