Lightning struck twice for the Padres Saturday night at Coors Field in Denver.

First, switch-hitting catcher Yasmani Grandal, who arrived in Colorado earlier in the day after being promoted from Triple-A Tucson, hit homers from both sides of the plate for his first two major league hits in his first major league start Saturday night.

After scanning baseball's records books, the Elias Sport Bureau determined that had never happened before.

And it gets better.

Infielder Alexi Amarista, who stands somewhere between his listed 5-foot-7 and the more likely 5-foot-4, also hit two homers Saturday night in the Padres 8-4 win.

Grandal and Amarista, who are both 23, became only the fifth set of hitters in major league history under the age of 24 to hit two homers in the same game for the same team.

Grandal and Amarista are the third and fourth Padres to have two-homer games this season with both Carlos Quentin and Chase Headley also having two two-homer games this year. No Padre has hit more than two homers in a game.

Other Grandal notes:

--He became the sixth player since 1974 with a multi-homer game in his first major league start (last was Toronto catcher J.P. Arenchia on Aug. 7, 2010; only other Padre was Keith Lockhart on April 8, 1994).

--Fourth player in Padres history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game (Ken Caminiti did it eight times, Milton Bradley and Geoff Blum both did it once).

--Ninth player in Padres history to homer for first major league hit (last was catcher Luis Martinez last July 27; others were P Tim Lollar, CF Kevin McReynolds, P Dave Eiland, 1B Dave Staton, SS Kevin Nicholson, OF Jason Bay, OF Drew Macias).

Grandal was promoted from Triple-A Tucson when C Nick Hundley, who was hitting .166, was optioned to the Tucson.
