While many folks are focusing on a possible trade of Zack Greinke by the Milwaukee Brewers, the club is trying to find a way to keep the ace right-hander.

Greinke on Friday confirmed a report by Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com that the Brewers offered a five-year deal for $100 million or more to keep the pitcher rather than trade him before the July 31 deadline.

"I can say Heyman is pretty accurate with what he's saying," Greinke said.

The Brewers were negotiating with Greinke, who can be a free agent after the season, in the spring, but talks broke off after San Francisco's Matt Cain received a five-year, $112.5 million extension, raising the bar.

However, the team was expected to take another run at Greinke before the trade deadline, and it has done so. General manager Doug Melvin did not confirm the offer but did indicate it won't be easy to keep Greinke off the market.

"There's talk about Cole Hamels signing in Philadelphia," Melvin said. "If he does, he will be one of the few young players to get this close (to free agency) and do so.

"Zack falls in that category, too. Once young players get this close to free agency, they usually test the market. It only happens a few times (that they don't)."

Prior to Cain's deal, most pitchers in Greinke's category had signed for five years and between $85 million and $95 million. Melvin said he didn't take it personally that Greinke has not been receptive to offers thus far.

If Greinke declines to sign an extension and the Brewers don't climb into the NL Central race, he'll likely be traded. He had his last start skipped to get rest after a busy schedule the previous week, and he will pitch again Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels are among the clubs that have shown interest in Greinke should the Brewers decide to trade him. If he shows he is healthy and on top of his game Tuesday against the Phillies, that interest could ratchet up.
