Former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told a Chicago radio station that he knew slugger Adam Dunn was in for a long year before last season even started.

Guillen said he was told by the team's hitting coach on the very first day of spring training that there was a "problem" with Dunn's swing.

Unconcerned at first, Guillen said he agreed with the assessment when he initially saw Dunn taking batting practice.

"I looked at his swing and I told (bench coach) Joey Cora going home, 'We've got a big problem,' " Guillen said.

Big things had been expected from Dunn, who had signed a four-year, $56 million contract prior to last season with Chicago.

Instead, Dunn went on to have a disastrous season, batting .159 with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs - all career lows.

Dunn had belted 38 homers in each of the previous two seasons with Washington - and that was preceded by five consecutive 40-homer seasons.

"It was painful to see Adam Dunn every at-bat and walk behind me with a long face (after) striking out," Guillen said. "People in Chicago, believe me, he tried everything in his power to get better."
