In an effort to stay close to our roots, the staff at Padres Public, will offer-up a haiku each Monday (sorry – I’m late) to describe the previous week in Padres Baseball. Restricting our feelings to 3 lines and 17 syllables to describe a week of play is a massive undertaking, but (un) fortunately, we are more than up to the task. In a week that saw the Padres win 3 and lose 5 most of the attention centered around Will Venable who was named the N.L. player of the week. Not surprisingly, most of the haiku submissions this week centered around the hot hitting RF/CF who turns 31 in October. Left Coast Bias Padres return home Venable can hit lefties? Walk-offs always fun Ghost of Ray Kroc A week of pure meh. Colorado baseball sucks. Padres split with Mets. Vocal Minority (Nate) Venable’s hot streak Can’t make this team watchable Is Little League on? Avenging Jack Murphy Will Venable’s future In right field forever, guys? He’s a golden God. Will Venable is doing Will Venable things

Who is Will Venable? We know about his hairline. We know he went to Princeton. We know about his dad, former major leaguer Max Venable. We’ve seen Will’s highlights. We’ve suffered through his lowlights. But really, what kind of player is he? 2009: .256/.323/.440 with 12 home runs and a 108 wRC+ in 324 PA’s 2010: .245/.324/.408 with 13 home runs and a 101 wRC+ in 445 PA’s...

Padres 1B loses track of bag, commits error

Your browser does not support iframes. San Diego Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso was charged with an error on a routine grounder when he somehow lost track of the bag at first during Sunday's game at Petco Park. It happened in the second inning as New York Mets batter Juan Lagares hit a chopper to the left side of the infield that was tracked down by pitcher Eric Stults...

Rumors: Padres place Chase Headley on waivers

The San Diego Padres have placed third baseman Chase Headley on waivers, according to CBS' Jon Heyman. Placing players on waivers is standard procedure and deals don't often happen, but this may be different. The Padres are 16.5 games out of first place in the NL West and Headley won't negotiate a deal during the season. Headley told this to Corey Brock of MLB.com...

Padres Recall Boxberger; Designate O’Sullivan

The Sean O’Sullivan experiment may be over as the Padres announced Monday afternoon that the club has decided to designate the 25-year old right hander for assignment. O’Sullivan’s departure from the roster was corresponded with the recall of RHP Brad Boxberger; with O’Sullivan being DFA’d, the Padres now have only 39 active members on their official 40-man roster. O...

While You Were (Day) Drinking: Game 124 (SD vs NYM)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a Sunday afternoon in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were (day) drinking. Padres. Will Venable. Walk-off home run. Any questions? Eric Stults pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits & 2 walks with 5 K’s. Nick Hundley went 3-for-3 with 1 walk & scored a run. The Pittsburgh...

Get Shorty

…Out of Center Field Apologies to Elmore Leonard, whose death yesterday at the age of 87 inspired this post, if you can believe it.* When Cameron Maybin went down with his knee injury, Bud Black had, to play center field, his choice of two fourth outfielders — Will Venable & Chris Denorfia. And a utility player who was seen by most as just an emergency outfielder, Alexi...

Padres 2, Pirates 1

Ian Kennedy pitched seven strong innings, combining with two relievers on a four-hitter, and Yonder Alonso drove in two runs as the San Diego Padres beat the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. Kennedy, who played at Southern Cal, outpitched Gerrit Cole, who pitched at UCLA before the Pirates made him the first pick overall in the June...

Presenting Maybe Baseball’s Very Worst Bunter

Just so no one’s offended, I want to make one thing very clear: I am not here to be overly critical of Tyson Ross, baseball player. Tyson Ross is a pretty good baseball player, who’s succeeding at his primary job. Right now he’s sitting on an ERA in the mid-2s. Over eight starts with the […]

Venable hits walk-off HR, Padres beat Mets 4-3

This season has afforded the Padres few positives. Sunday's 4-3 walk-off victory over the Mets featured at least a couple even if they represented small triumphs amid a larger grimmer picture. For starters New York ace Matt Harvey was done after just 86 pitches for a team mindful of its 24-year-old prodigy's accumulating workload. The Padres were not beaten by Harvey against...

Padres 4, Mets 3

Will Venable hit a leadoff homer in the ninth inning to give the San Diego Padres a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Venable sent a 1-2 pitch from Pedro Feliciano (0-2) just inside the right-field foul pole for his team-high 17th home run, increasing his career high. Venable, who also drove in a run in the fifth, extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games,...
