Found January 09, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
PLAYERS: Scott Hairston
TEAMS: New York Mets
A baseball official said free-agent Scott Hairston does not appear to be imminently signing anywhere, according to a report by Adam Rubin. And while speculation is that teams, including the Yankees and Mets, would like to hold the line on a contract for Hairston at one year, there is a belief the Mets could go to two years in order to re-sign the outfielder. Hairston seeks a multi-year deal. Either way, he clearly will get a raise from the $1.1 million base salary he earned in 2012 while slugging 20 homers in 377 at-bats — and hitting .286 with 11 homers in 189 at-bats against southpaws. Although I prefer a one-year deal myself, I still believe the Mets will sign him and that it likely will be a two-year deal. I wonder if he’d take a one with an option?

Mets and Yanks battling over Hairston and Francisco?

Long gone are the offseason days when the New York Mets and New York Yankees were rumored to be doing battle over the right to have stars like Carlos Beltran and Johan Santana wear their uniform the coming season.  That much we know.  It’s interesting, however, to now see the Yankees join the Mets in their pursuit of offseason bargains.  I hesitate to call it a ‘bidding war’...

Mets Rumors: New York to Trade Johan Santana?

Johan Santana will most likely be the opening day starter for the New York Mets considering they shipped R.A. Dickey off to Toronto this offseason. Even though the two-time Cy Young Award winner will be taking the mound for opening day that doesn’t mean that he will finish the year with the Mets. Bob Klapisch of the Record seems to think that the Mets will be looking...

Mike Can Still Make The Mets Hall of Fame In 2013

Mike Piazza may have been shutout by the Baseball Writers which you can read below, but according to Adam Rubin, he could very well be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame during the 2013 season. The Mets’ Hall of Fame committee — which has included team employees Dave Howard and Jay Horwitz, former player Al Jackson and media members Gary Cohen, Howie Rose and Marty Noble ...

Mets Should Say NO To Pavano

I keep hearing rumblings the Mets are interested in Carl Pavano, who made $8.5 million last year with Minnesota at age 36. Why? While the pressures pitching for the Yankees are different than they are the Mets – the expectations in the Bronx are always greater – this is not a move they should be making. I wouldn’t want Pavano in the Mets’ rotation if he were willing to pitch...

Who’s Catching?

You have to have a catcher or you’ll have all passed balls. -Casey Stengel The GM of the Mets, Sandy Alderson spoke with Adam Rubin of ESPN-NY and had this to say about the Mets catching situation heading into 2013. “Right now we have three catchers on the [40-man] roster, (Travis d’Arnaud, John Buck and Anthony Recker) and we don’t have a tremendous amount of depth at Triple...

Why the Mets need to consider Jair Jurrjens

If the season were to begin today, the New York Mets would have a starting rotation that was questionable at best. Johan Santana was a disaster after his historic no hitter and his health is a major factor. The Mets even have been rumored to be shopping him. The question is who would be dumb enough to take that massive contract for a pitcher his age with his health issues? There’s...

Dickey Thankful Mets Didn’t Meet His Demands, Jays GM Says Alderson Showed No Respect

Associated Press reported on some of the comments made at R.A. Dickey’s introductory press conference in Toronto on Tuesday afternoon. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos made a disparaging remark against the Mets front office who he said didn’t give the reigning Cy Young the respect he deserved. After going 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA and leading the NL with 230 strikeouts,...

Playing a waiting game with Hairston

It was said that Scott Hairston could sign with one of the NY teams any day but since that report which came directly from his agent the Yanks have backed out and the Mets don't appear to be budging from a one year deal.  Based on players of similar performance, Hairston should get a two year deal but the market may have dried up.  Ken Davidoff of the NY Post believes the...

Full update on the Hairston situation...

Photo by Michael BaronReports yesterday indicated that Scott Hairston could be choosing between the two NY teams and that a decision could be made any day.  "I think he's a good fit for either team," Close said. "But there are different roles at each place and Scott is deciding which is the best option for him." source ESPN NY So the Yanks could probably...

Matt Harvey, 2013 Fantasy Sleeper

For a few years, I talked about how Mike Minor or Kris Medlen were gonna be my last round starter flyer in all leagues. Never really worked out. Sure, I snatched Medlen off waivers last year when he needed to be, but for a few years they were drafted and dropped numerous times before they rewarded fantasy owners. I don't tell you this to remain modest. Does my mustache make...

Hats, Hats, Everywhere a Hat

What. The Hell. Is This About? Frankly, it’s not at all surprising, I suppose, especially when given the level of marketing and promotions within Major League Baseball already. I’d love to know more about this, since I assume it has something to do with knowing these guys will be on camera after games doing interviews, so it has to have something to do with that, i.e., marketing...

Alderson Shoots Minaya A Zinger…

For some strange reason I keep posting about stuff and then it’s in the news the next day (not my post, the subject). So speaking of that 11th pick the Mets have, here’s what Sandy Alderson had to say about it courtesy of Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger. “We don’t want to lose our first-round draft pick,” Sandy Alderson said by phone last night, according to McCullough...

Sidd Finch: The Backstory

“There’s no single sport that has the hold on our dreams and fantasies the way baseball does. Sidd has become a symbol, like the cornfield in Iowa.” — Myra Gelband, former Sports Illustrated editor _______________________ In an era when Hollywood was creating uniformed ballplayers walking out of cornfields and crushing majestic moon shots in to the New York City sky, the...
