I looked at the first fourteen players on the ballot (alphabetically) this morning. Now, the final thirteen;Dale Murphy – YES – Murphy is similar to Mattingly as a player who appeared well on his way then faded. Where Murphy gets in that Mattingly does not is in two areas; first Murphy played a crucial defensive position extremely well (Mattingly was great defensively but at an easy position) and second Murphy had 1300 more plate appearances.Phil Nevin – NO – Nevin came up short but that is nothing new for #1 picks. At the moment no #1 overall pick is in the Hall though in coming years Ken Griffey Jr. (1987), Chipper Jones (1990) and Alex Rodriguez (1993) should change that.Rafael Palmeiro – YES – Palmeiro is fundamentally an all-longevity case but at some point the numbers become too overwhelming. Unfairly remembered for the Gold Glove he did not deserve Palmeiro was an excellent defensive player in his prime.Brad Radke – NO – Radke probably had a few more years to give but he ...
