The July 5th, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Haren finally admits to back problems, Iannetta readying for another try at rehab, Frieri trailing badly in Final Vote balloting and much more...

The Story: Dan Haren finally admitted that he is still suffering from back problems that plagued him earlier in the season.

The Monkey Says: It is annoying that he hid this obvious problem for so long, but at least he is finally addressing it.  I can't help but wonder if he might not have owned up to it (or the coaching staff might have pressed harder on the issue) had Weaver and Williams not already been on the DL at different times in the last month.

The Story: Chris Iannetta believes he is on the verge of a rehab assignment... for the third time.

The Monkey Says: But this time, he means it.  He's had setbacks twice already, so I will believe it when I see it but I hope I see it soon because I am going to gouge my eyes out if I have to watch Bobby Wilson hit anymore.

The Story: Ernestro Frieri is trailing badly in the Final Vote balloting.

The Monkey Says: As of Tuesday, he was 4th, behind the likes of Jason Hammel, so he might want to start making real vacation plan for All-Star weekend, though he stands a chance of being picked as a replacement once guys start pulling out.

The Story: Scott Downs isn't upset over being an All-Star snub.

The Monkey Says: Honestly, I'd rather see Downs in the game as a show of respect for his excellent body of work over the past several years.  Don't get me wrong, Frieri is amazing this season, but one stellar half-season is really the only credential he has on his All-Star resume.

The Story: Vernon Wells recently resumed baseball activities and could be on track to rejoin the team on July 20th.

The Monkey Says: The Angels season is looking bright right now, why go and ruin it by making me think about Vernon Wells?  Lots of words could be spilled about what to do with Well (and I'm sure I will spill them eventually), but I have a feeling that an "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" policy strongly applies here.

The Story: Fox News blowhard Sean Hannity made a bet on the Yankees-Angels series with Angels fan and model/host Leann Tweeden.

The Monkey Says: Now I hate Hannity even more, partly because he is a Yankees fan (of course he is) but also because he is stupid enough to make a bet with Tweeden that actually involves here putting on more clothes.

The Story: Ariel Pena should be considered for the rotation if the Angels need another starter.

The Monkey Says: Pena is blowing up right now, so he could be a nice short-term solution, but he still is a bit raw and doesn't have a polished third pitch.  He's likely a better option than Trevor Bell or Brad Mills, but if the Angels intend to count on him and Richards for a long period of time, they could be in big trouble, making a trade starting pitching far more likely.

Haren could go on DL due to back ailment

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Dan Haren has been one of the most dependable and rugged starting pitchers in the majors since 2005. No one has made more starts in that time, and he has pitched at least 215 innings each of the past seven seasons, the longest active streak in the majors. But all those innings might be showing their wear and tear. Haren finally admitted that a...

Ailing Back Hurts Haren’s Velocity, Effectiveness

We’ve seen Dan Haren‘s results this season, and we’ve been wondering what’s going on. His walks are up. He’s giving up more hits. And his FIP is the highest of his career. Granted, his poor first half hasn’t been as alarming as, say, Tim Lincecum‘s, but Haren’s been off his game for the first three months of the season. After Tuesday’s latest disappointing outing...

Indians face another tough pitcher in Haren

After Jered Weaver demonstrated once again his dominance at Progressive Field, now it's Dan Haren's turn to do the same. The struggling Haren brings in the third-lowest ERA among pitchers with at least five starts at the Cleveland stadium as the Los Angeles Angels continue a three-game set against the Indians on Tuesday night. Los Angeles (45-35) opened this series Monday...

Game Recap 7/3/2012: Backing down - Indians 9, Angels 5

What a shocker.  Dan Haren stunk up the joint... again.  Only this time he admitted after the start that his back was bothering him... still. I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. All along, the most probable explanation for his poor performance has been recurrence (assuming they ever actually went away) of his lower back pain.  Now Danny will be heading back to Anaheim...

Crazy Trade Idea: Dan Haren for Zack Greinke

'Tis the season for trade speculation.  Half-assed ideas are now the order of the day and I think I might have the king of them all. The rumor mills currently seem to think that the Angels are going to be relatively quiet at the trade deadline.  They have a lot of wants and desires, but the consensus is that they don't have the financial wiggle room to make that happen...
