TEAMS: Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels
Tempe, Arizona -- Cincinnati's trip to Tempe ended in defeat as the host Angels (7-5) turned away the Reds (5-9-1) by a score of 3-1 on Thursday. Both clubs trotted out their aces in this one and the box score reflects exactly that -- the game featured very little offense. Here's the good, the bad and the notables from the exhibition contest:
The Good:
- Johnny Cueto started and fared relatively well against Los Angeles' regulars. The right-hander held them to two runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings of work. He struckout three and walked just one.
- Sean Marshall struckout a pair in one scoreless inning of relief.
- Denis Phipps doubled off of Angels ace C.J. Wilson TWICE. He's batting a solid .360 on the spring.
- Thank God these games don't count.
The Bad:
- Cincy's 1, 2 and 3 hitters combined to go 0-for-12. Not going to win many ball games doing that.
- Chris Heisey was hitless in three at-bats, lowering his average to .115.

Ryan Madson almost healthy
Remember how awesome it was when the Cincinnati Reds shocked the off-season baseball world by signing Ryan Madson as their closer? That was pretty cool. You know what would be even cooler? Having Madson actually pitch in a game.
Madson has made no appearances in games so far this Spring Training, thanks to pain he felt in his elbow during his first bullpen throwing session.

Miller sees promise in Reds' rotation
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Unless something dastardly happens to catchers Devin Mesoraco and Ryan Hanigan, fans aren't likely to see much of catcher Corky Miller this year.
That doesn't minimize his importance or his contributions to the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff during spring training and over the course of the long, long season.
Miller, 36, is one of the most beloved players...
Reds' Valdez willing to play anywhere
TEMPE, Ariz. When Wilson Valdez says, "I'll play anywhere," he sounds like that old Hank SnowWillie Nelson song: "I've Been Everywhere."
On a baseball field, Valdez has been everywhere. When you ask most players what they play, they answer with pitcher or catcher or infielder or outfielder.
You ask Valdez what he play and he says, "Baseball."...

Six Reds players have their alma mater in NCAA Tourney
Many consider March Madness to be the best time of the year. In fact, the wild upsets, crazy buzzer beaters, busted brackets, and large office pools practically make this weekend an unofficial national holiday.
Of the many things running through my mind today there were two in particular that aided in the creation of this post. The first involved Reds baseball and the second...
