ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Evan Longoria homered and drove in four runs to help the Tampa Bay Rays extend their winning streak to six games with an 8-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. Longoria hit a three-run homer in the first inning and added an RBI single in the fourth for the Rays, who had a season-high 16 hits in support of starter James Shields (4-0). The Tampa Bay ace became the first starter in the AL to win four games this season. Shields, who struck out eight, allowed four runs and 11 hits in six innings. Rangers starter Matt Harrison (3-1) gave up seven runs and a career-high 14 hits in five innings. The left-hander had allowed a combined four runs in winning his first three starts of the season. Josh Hamilton hit his league-leading ninth home run and Elvis Andrus added three hits for the Rangers. Andrus lined out to center with the bases loaded to end the eighth against reliever Wade Davis. The Texas shortstop just missed hitting a grand slam on the previous pitch when his shot down the line in right landed just a few feet foul. The Rangers were facing the Rays for the first time since beating them in last year's AL division series. Luke Scott homered in the sixth, and B.J. Upton and Jeff Keppinger each had three hits for the Rays. This is Tampa Bay's longest winning streak since a seven-game run July 24-30, 2010. Harrison pitched five innings and earned the victory in Game 4 of the ALDS to close out the Rays last season. On Friday night, the Rays pounced on Harrison in the first inning. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead as the first six batters of the game reached. Desmond Jennings singled and Carlos Pena reached on Ian Kinsler's fielding error at second. Longoria drove a 3-2 change-up just over the wall in the center. It was his fourth home run of the season. Ben Zobrist walked, and Keppinger and Upton followed with singles. Upton's hit scored Zobrist and gave the Rays a 4-0 lead. After Hamilton's RBI grounder in the first, Tampa Bay picked up a run in the third on Chris Gimenez's RBI single. Longoria had an RBI single and scored on Zobrist's double in the fourth, extending Tampa Bay's lead to 7-1. Harrison had his ERA jump from 1.66, which led the AL coming into the game, to 3.38. Hamilton hit a two-run blast in the fifth and David Murphy chipped in with a solo shot in the sixth off Shields. The Rangers had runners on first and third with two outs in the sixth, but Shields induced a weak grounder to the mound from Andrus to end the threat. NOTES: Jennings extended his hitting streak to nine games. ... Andrus is now 10 for 16 lifetime against Shields. ... Harrison had his seven-game winning streak dating to Sept. 4 come to an end. ... Shields improved to 6-2 lifetime against the Rangers.

Rangers slugger Hamilton leaves with stiff back

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton left Sunday night's game against Tampa Bay with stiffness in his back. Hamilton, the American League's home run leader with nine, is day-to-day. He got his AL-leading 25th RBI on a single to center field in the first inning, scoring Elvis Andrus. In the same inning, Hamilton, who also leads the league in total bases and slugging percentage...

See the Funny Little Clown

I write about baseball. I write about it a lot. I also tweet a lot on Twitter...mostly about baseball. The writing is meant to be entertaining and insightful. I think I carry that off most of the time. In fact, I will go so far to say that I am pretty decent at it. But while my writing tries to be upbeat and entertaining, lately it is a bit like an old Bobby Goldsboro song, "...

Rangers' Hamilton leaves game with back stiffness

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton left Sunday's game against Tampa Bay after two innings because of lower-back stiffness. The Rangers listed Hamilton's status as day-to-day on Sunday. Hamilton had an RBI single in the first inning, and he is hitting .395 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs this season. Hamilton was replaced in left field by David Murphy.

Rangers' Hamilton prepares to face Rays' shift

Beyond the raw numbers, one of the most amazing things about Josh Hamilton's amazing April has been his ability to get hits even when opponents are over-shifting him to the right side of the field. The shift is something the Texas Rangers slugger will have to deal with this weekend when the Tampa Bay Rays come to Arlington. The teams play a three-game series. Tampa Bay started...

Not Sure How I Feel About Evan Longoria’s Halloween Party in April

Tampa Bay Rays all-star Evan Longoria and his playmate girlfriend Jaime Edmondson hosted a “Halloween in April” party this past weekend. She tweeted a pic calling Evan her ‘sexy Spartacus”. What she failed to mention is that Longoria looks like he’s wearing a diaper and that “Halloween in April” is really f%cking stupid. Once again, Jaime Edmondson is another case...

Rangers Secret Weapon: Robbie Ross

The Texas Rangers are off to a tremendous start to the 2012 season, with a MLB-best 15-4 record.  Names like Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler, Yu Darvish, and Matt Harrison have been stealing the spotlight, but perhaps we should all direct our attention to a lefty reliever by the name of Robbie Ross.  The 22 year old made his MLB debut this season and has pitched in 6 games.  Nothing...

WAG – Jamie Edmondson

With the NFL Draft tonight I had to go with one of the hottest WAGs out there, Jamie Edmondson. She may not be a WAG of an NFL player but she was a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader, so that counts right? I’m quite surprised to know that she’s a former police offer as well. I’m sure all of us wouldn’t mind that traffic stop. Her boyfriend Tampa Bay Rays Evan Longoria...

Rangers rebound for 7-2 victory

Apparently you can beat the Rangers, but you can’t keep them down. After last night’s ugliest of games, the boys bounced back with a pretty dominating win tonight.  They got on the board in the 1st with two runs on a single by Josh Hamilton …. and they never looked back. Colby Lewis was a huge part of tonight’s win.  Maybe the biggest part.  He pitched six solid innings...

Fountain of Youth? Check the AL East

Some players are just entering or in the midst of their prime. Guys like Josh Hamilton and Matt Kemp came out slugging to start the year and are early MVP candidates for their respective leagues a month into the season. Meanwhile, there are two guys who supposedly had their best baseball behind them who are off to arguably the hottest starts of their careers. Yes, AL East haters...

Rays try to extend win streak against Rangers

The Tampa Bay Rays exacted a little bit of revenge while extending their winning streak. To earn a seventh straight victory Saturday night, the Rays must overcome their woes against undefeated Texas Rangers starter Colby Lewis. Tampa Bay (13-7) jumped on the team that's eliminated it from the past two postseasons early in Friday's series opener. The Rays scored four runs...
