On this day 45 years ago, one of the greatest second baseman of all-time was born in Smithtown, New York. This blinding, brilliant light from heaven would go on to become one of the greatest Houston Astros of all-time. In a 20 year career, that moved from catcher to center field to second base, Biggio hit 291 homeruns and stole 414 bases, all with the Astros. He’s in elite company with the 3,060 hits he’s amassed and has an impressive career line of .281/.363/.433. As I wrote recently, Biggio is Houston’s career leader in games played, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, and total bases.
The second baseman is almost guaranteed to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer and just may go in to Cooperstown with his fellow Killer-B, Jeff Bagwell. Craig, Astros fans wish you a very happy birthday.
