The Baltimore Orioles enter the unofficial second half of the baseball season at 53-43. They sit just 4 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East behind Boston and a 1 1/2 out of the second Wild Card spot behind Texas. They have proven that last season was no fluke and that they are a team on the rise. The main reason for the Orioles being 10 games over .500 is their prolific offense. The Orioles are first in the majors in slugging percentage, third in runs scored, and fifth in batting average. The unquestioned star has been 1B Chris Davis. Davis leads the Orioles in batting average, runs, runs batted in, home runs, and on base percentage. Teams still are pitching right at him, and don’t seem reasonably fearful of him just yet. However, he is not the only hitter pitchers have to fear when facing the O’s. Baltimore’s second biggest threat on offense has been Manny Machado. Machado has been as good or better than advertised in his first full big league season. He leads the Orioles in hits and has an astounding 39 doubles.
