Jed Lowrie’s brief Red Sox career has been defined by a major wrist injury and a lengthy battle with mononucleosis.
Now, another health concern will keep Lowrie off the field as the shortstop will likely need surgery on his ailing left shoulder, according to a report from SI.com’s Will Carroll:
“Lowrie’s sore shoulder has progressed to a point where Dr. Lewis Yocum will be taking a look… Surgery is ‘more a likelihood than a possibility’”.
A visit to Dr. Yocum is never a good sign, and if surgery is required for Lowrie, it could end his 2011 season. The infielder is scheduled to meet with Yocum on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
He was placed on the disabled list last Friday after aggravating his shoulder with a swing and miss against David Price in Tampa Bay the night before.
The original injury occurred during a collision with Carl Crawford on May 29th.
