Law has the usual six players at the top, with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon at the top of the list. He’s got Alen Hanson, Gregory Polanco, and Luis Heredia as the next three, which is the same order...
First Pitch: Francisco Liriano vs Jonathan Sanchez
When the news came out that the Pittsburgh Pirates were close to an agreement with left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez, my initial reaction was that he was very similar to Francisco Liriano. It started out as a basic comparison. They were both left-handed pitchers coming off down seasons with control issues, high strikeouts, and they were each a few years removed from a great season...

Another Pirates prospect ranking has been posted today. MLB.com has posted their list of the top twenty prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates system, complete with scouting reports on each player. The top of the system ranks similar to almost every other list we’ve seen, although the order from third through six differ slightly. Gerrit Cole sits in the top spot, followed by Jameson...

First Pitch: The Starting Pitching Depth
With yesterday’s news that the Pirates were adding Jonathan Sanchez, and today’s news that they’re still on track to sign Francisco Liriano, the starting pitching scene is getting crowded. Here is a breakdown of all the options who are either currently on the team, or in the case of Sanchez/Liriano, expected to sign.

Gerrit Cole was ranked the highest, coming in at number eight. Cole was the second best pitcher on the list, with Dylan Bundy ahead of him ranked third overall. Law noted that Cole should be ready for the Pirates rotation after a half year in the minors, mentioning that 2012 was...

Bucs close to signing Jonathan Sanchez
According to Jon Heyman and Rob Biertempfel, the Pirates are close to a minor league deal with pitcher Jonathan Sanchez. The 30-year-old lefty is coming off a miserable year (1-9, 8.07 ERA), although he had a fair amount of success with the Giants from 2006-2011. He’s been inconsistent but has shown flashes of brilliance, including a no-hitter in 2009 and a great season in 2010...

Report: Pirates Close to Deal with Jonathan Sanchez
Confirmed: #Pirates close to minor league contract with FA lhp Jonathan Sanchez.
— Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib) February 5, 2013
It looks like the Pirates have found their contingency plan to Francisco Liriano in LHP Jonathan Sanchez.
Pirates fans will most likely remember Sanchez as the piece the Neal Huntington wanted from San Francisco in the Freddy Sanchez trade, but...
Roster Watch: Andrew McCutchen
There is no way Andrew McCutchen is going to make this team. He is a dastardly man. A man with no regards for his opponents and a man who plays well outside the bounds of common decency. Just look at him! He is setting up poor Carlos Lee for the Dudley Death Drop. GET THE…
First Pitch: Would You Rather Have Polanco/Hanson or Chase Headley?
Jim Bowden had an article at ESPN talking about how the San Diego Padres should trade Chase Headley right now. In the article he listed the Pittsburgh Pirates as one of two teams with a moderate chance of landing Headley, noting that a package of Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson could get the deal done.
Bowden does a lot of these types of articles. He takes a player who isn’t necessarily...
MLB Hot Stove Notes: Pittsburgh Pirates Sign Jonathan Sanchez
I mentioned reports of this signing earlier in the week, but it’s now official, as the Pirates and southpaw starter Jonathan Sanchez have agreed to a minor league deal. It looks like the Pirates are taking a chance on some starters to turn it around at PNC Park, as Sanchez posted a 1-9 record, 8.09 ERA, and 2.09 WHIP in 64.2 innings pitched last season. Stuff has never been an...
The Perfect Game
Adam LaRoche is my favorite baseball player. Rod Barajas is my favorite baseball player. Both are former Pirates; neither was very popular as a Pirate. I have a habit of supporting the most unpopular players. I guess I feel like they need my support when it’s not coming from anywhere else. Tonight’s Pirates Playback on…
