In Jeremy Hellickson's mind, he could have done more to help the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. However, 5 2/3 shutout innings were enough, as the reigning AL Rookie of the Year ended a string of five winless starts, going back to Aug. 20, with a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. It's been an odd year for Hellickson, whom some critics felt was lucky last season since his sabermetric numbers didn't square with his successful results. Manager Joe Maddon has said several times that Hellickson has had better stuff this season, specially a better fastball, but even with Sunday's win, he has only a 9-10 record. He did, however, lower his ERA to 3.20, which is the seventh best in the American League. If anything, Hellickson hasn't had much luck this season, as he has allowed three runs or fewer in 25 starts (third most in the AL) out of 29, and he has only the nine wins to show for it. On the other hand, he has had trouble getting deep into games this seaso...

Rays wear wigs on road trip

Joe Maddon and his cast of characters are at it again. The Tampa Bay Rays enjoyed another themed road trip as they traveled to Boston Monday for a two-game series that begins Tuesday. This time, the theme was to “wig out”. Players and coaches were encouraged to wear wigs on the plane. Any legit wigs were going to be donated to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. The Rays...

Rays 3, Blue Jays 0

B.J. Upton hit his eighth home run in 14 games and Jeremy Hellickson won for the first time in more than a month to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0, Sunday. It was the fifth straight win for the Rays, who started the day 3 1/2 games behind the Oakland Athletics in the race for the AL's second wild-card spot. Hellickson (9-10) pitched 5 2-3 innings, giving...

How Good Is BJ Upton? What’s He Worth?

BJ Upton has been the face of the Tampa Bay Rays, bridging the gap between the Carl Crawford era and the Evan Longoria era. Upton is usually thought of as a speedy defensive centerfielder with some serious pop. A super high ceiling guy with the potential to be an unstoppable star. Upton has never really reached that potential, instead showing flashes of brilliance...

The Tampa Bay Rays have been shifting around other pieces of their rotation, but for David Price, they just want him to go out and pitch. Price will start Tuesday against the Red Sox in Boston on his usual fifth day, and he will do so again Sunday in Chicago against the White Sox. He'll then be lined up for a potential one-game wild-card playoff on Oct. 5. "I feel good...

Rays go for a sweep of Toronto on Sunday

A recent offensive surge has helped the Tampa Bay Rays remain a serious contender for an AL postseason spot. Looking for a fifth consecutive victory, the Rays try to complete a series sweep Sunday by continuing their home dominance of the Toronto Blue Jays. Desmond Jennings went 3 for 3 with a homer and Evan Longoria added a three-run shot as Tampa Bay (82-70) rolled to an 11-5...

Rays Invade Boston Disguised In Wigs

The Tampa Bay Rays are three games out of Oakland's Wild Card spot with nine games to go and the Angels sitting only two games behind the A's. While technically the Rays still have a chance, the shots are long. Let's call it a 10.5% chance because Cool Standings is awesome. The Rays go to Boston for a three game set where the Red Sox have a 0.0% chance to make the playoffs...
BIG BOMBING

Evan Longoria hits homer off light fixture

The Tampa Bay Rays may be a bit too far back (6.5 games) to catch the AL East leading New York Yankees but they’re a more manageable 3.5 games shy of a wildcard spot. The Rays won their fourth straight game today, 11-5 over the Toronto Blue Jays. Among the 15 hits Tampa [...]

It’s crunch time for the Rays

Heading into the final nine games of the regular season, the Tampa Bay Rays find themselves just three games back of the final wild card spot. However, what lies ahead is no easy task. The Rays’ final opponents are the Red Sox, White Sox, then the Orioles. The first six are in Boston and Chicago then end it at Tropicana Field against the Orioles.
