The Toronto Blue Jays might have lost more than a game Tuesday.

They likely will lose third baseman Brett Lawrie to suspension after he was ejected along with manager John Farrell for arguing over a called third strike in the ninth inning of the 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lawrie threw his batting helmet on the ground directly in front of plate umpire Bill Miller. It bounced and hit the umpire on the right hip.

With the count 3-1 and one out in the ninth, Lawrie thought Fernando Rodney twice threw him ball four. The umpire disagreed both times.

When Miller called strike two, Lawrie already was running to first base. Lawrie wasn't sure if the umpire felt that he had shown him up.

"That's totally not the way the way I wanted to come across," Lawrie said. "I just thought it was ball four and dropped my bat and started running because it was kind of a late call. I wasn't going to stand there and just wait for him to see if he made the call."

He came back, and the next pitch also was called a strike, and Lawrie became enraged.

Lawrie took responsibility for the helmet hitting the umpire.

"That was not my intention at all," Lawrie said. "I've never, ever done anything to go at an umpire in my life, and I didn't mean to tonight. I apologize for that. It just kind of took an unlucky bounce, and I think I got him, so my apologies for that. ...

"I'm not going to say I haven't had a dispute (with an umpire), but I've never thrown anything or gotten ever close to an umpire like that, or ever put an umpire in danger. It's not what I'm out there to do. It's just my passion for the game, and I wanted to help my teammates out as best I could."
