Down to three starters, the Minnesota Twins are putting their rotation together a day at a time.

Liam Hendriks, who was recalled from Class AAA Rochester late Thursday, will be officially activated for Saturday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Target Field.

"He's been told. He'll be here (Friday)," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He'll be in uniform (Friday) kind of hanging out."

Hendriks, 23, went 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA in seven starts for Rochester after he was demoted in early May. He was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four starts for Minnesota early this season.

With P.J. Walters and Carl Pavano on the disabled list because of shoulder injuries, the Twins were down to three starters this week. They had their best, lefty Scott Diamond, going Thursday against the Phillies but lost when Jim Thome hit his second homer in as many days to power a 6-1 Philadelphia victory.

As for who will fill that fifth spot, it's TBD.

"We've got in-house candidates," Gardenhire said.

Because the Twins have an off day Monday before starting a road trip through Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, they can start their rotation up again on Tuesday with Diamond starting against the Pirates at PNC Park. But when June 23 rolls around, they'll need another starter. It's likely that will be a spot start by a reliever, maybe Jeff Manship.

Walters was placed on the DL on Thursday after an MRI revealed inflammation in his shoulder. He faced only four batters, all of whom singled, in Wednesday's 9-8 loss to Philadelphia.

"I think in 15 days I should be fine and I'll get back out there," he said.

Pavano, who has a strain in the anterior capsule of his right shoulder, is a longer-term project. He has yet to throw a ball since going on the DL retroactive to June 2.
