Each year, the United Cardinal Bloggers vote for various awards associated with the Cardinals. Here is the ballot for the Cardinal Blogger Awards. For Player of the Year, I wholeheartedly agree with those who even considered Yadier Molina as NL MVP. While Posey won deservedly so, it is a testament to Yadi’s amazing 2012 season that he garnered significant NL MVP voting. He was certainly the Cardinals MVP, so I’m voting for him over Matt Holliday and the impressive Allen Craig. By my chosen offensive metric, the greatest of the catching Molina brothers was the 8th best hitter in the NL, nearly surpassing his teammate outfield slugger Holliday, while playing elite defense at a tougher position. Yadi even beat out Allen Craig, the Cardinals’ other slugger. An amazing observation about 2012 is that the Cardinals had 4 of the top 10 hitters in wRC+: Holliday, Molina, Craig, and Freese. Yadier Molina hit 22 home runs, stole 12 bases, and lead the Cardinals in fWAR in 2012. Cardinals Pla...

David Freese crash almost ruined St. Louis Cardinals’ holidays

A deer, supposedly without a red nose, nearly ruined Christmas for David Freese, the St. Louis Cardinals and their fans. Freese crashed into a tree Friday afternoon near St. Louis after he swerved to avoid a deer on the road. Folks in the St. Louis area know how prevalent deer are in the area, especially during this time of the year, and many probably know someone who has hit a...

Oscar Taveras, 2013 Fantasy Outlook

When Scott, our prospect writer, gave out his awards for 2012, he gave Oscar Taveras the minor league break-out hitter award, saying this in September, “Taveras spent the entire year at Double-A Springfield after skipping the High-A level over the off-season.  The 20-year-old is being touted as the best pure hitter in the minors after hitting .321/.380/.572 and winning the Texas...

Shelby Miller, 2013 Fantasy Outlook

Jaime Garcia is questionable for the start of the season, Lance Lynn might not be in the rotation after his extended turd-flinging, Lohse is gone, the Cardinals coaching staff can make any fifth starter an ace… These are just some of the reasons why Shelby Miller should be in the Cardinals 2013 rotation. The final answer on that will probably be decided on the last few days of...

Musial faced MLB’s last left-handed shortstop – sort of

In a jesting comment made here at The Cardinal Nation blog, reader blingboy wondered if the St. Louis Cardinals medical staff must have looked at the wrong elbow of shortstop Rafael Furcal when recently proclaiming him to be completely healed. That led me to wonder about the identity of the last left-handed thrower to take the field as a shortstop in a Major League Baseball game...

Mets return to GCL a positive for the Cardinals

In a cost-cutting move made last fall, the New York Mets exited from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League (GCL), while maintaining their presence in the Appalachian League, the next rung up in the rookie-level food chain. The organization recently announced that their hiatus from the GCL was just one season in duration, with the Mets set to compete in both leagues in 2013. The Mets...
